Is the flat Earth theory just an attempt for social outcasts to make their life feel more exciting? It's the only explanation I can think of as to why people would believe this.

They're probably feeding into the delusion to make it seem like the Elite are predictable, they're easy to figure out and that reality is as concrete as they think it is so that means their souls will be saved by a person that they think is a godman who died for their sins. They need this to be true because otherwise there's no way out for them as they know they're fucked royally.
