How do I overcome my self-imposed limitations and choose a path that I'm fairly certain will lead me to a better future than my current?

It's recently come to my attention that I've been a disappointment to my parents since I was a teenager. I was generally always suspicious of that, but it being told almost directly has really given me perspective. I feel like my the best thing I can do to change myself for the better is a drastic status quo change, such as joining the military, but I've become very comfortable with my current location. Of course, that could just be my fear of change talking, and I know I need to be more concerned with my future more than the present.

It's sort of ironic. I have a strong feeling that change is the best for my future, but I have a crippling fear of it that goes back to since I was a child.
