It's not so much that God designed them to be sexually compatible with humans so much as they took forms that were capable of it.

In their base forms angels/demons are spiritual entities with no physical forms, whenever they take physical forms they tend to look like something out of Lovecraft. However, they can and occasionally do take human forms (usually when delivering a message, because a form that would drive the recipient insane is bad for comprehension.)

So what you have with the "Sons of God" is a group of angels or demons who decided they would take the form of humans and procreate with humans for the hell of it. This apparently angered God enough that he imprisoned them forever.
