What you usually hear people say when giving instructions for salvation is "Ask the lord to come into your heart, and you will be saved."

That doesn't make very good theological sense.
However, Saying you accept Christ as your savior means you recognize the theological model of the atoning work of Christ and his sacrifice on the cross. His work on the Cross not only bought salvation, but it bought every good thing we get from God that was lost because of the seperation between man and God due to sin.

The name given to Moses when God was revealed in the Burning Bush was "I AM THAT I AM"; that name reveals how God is man's anti-thesis.What that name essentially means is what man needs, God is. God is our saviour, God is our healer, God is our provider, God is our banner, God is our counciller, etc.

But all of that was lost due to the fall of man due to sin. The old testament ceremonial law all points to Christs atoning work on the Cross in some way.
