I saw the first one in a theater crowded with teenage girls right behind me that screamed at all the jumps. that was actually the "scariest" part of that boring movie. My gf saw it with me and she wasnt scared at all either.
>>
>>19062119

haha, thats cool. Yeah I saw it in the theater too when it first came out. I was legitimately terrified because I'm a strong believer in the paranormal and always have been. PA was new for its time but Paramount Pictures milked THE FUCK out of the series and made all these stupid over the top sequels that to me made it a freakin joke of a concept now.

People used to actually buy that found footage shit. Because of sequels and knock-offs that shit is dead. Kind of disappointing to be honest.

Same. It was so highly recommended by so many people, on here and elsewhere online, so I watched it and wow was I pissed off by the end. The kid is beyond insufferable, he seriously made me almost turn it off multiple times, and then you find out that there was never any monster, nothing scary or supernatural happening at all, it was just a hallucination/metaphor for the mother's mental illness. Like could you give your audience a bigger middle finger than at the end a movie telling them "surprise! none of this was real!" What a fucking joke. And fuck every one of the idiots who recommends it in scary movie threads.

First off, that movie isn't "art", you fag.
Second, I don't give a shit whether you think the movie is good as a non-horror movie, it was marketed as--and is CONSTANTLY recommended as--a horror movie. If you asked for a good action flick and I recommended you watch The Notebook, wouldn't you be a little resentful that I deceived you?
>>
>>19063457
I agree.

Mama has a good concept though, just shitty execution. The same can be said of most the horror movies coming out these days.
>>
>>19062102
Come on now, the brianna wu documentary isnt that scary.
>>
>>19064757
Definitely. I think that's the problem with the majority of horror films today, they start with a good concept or premise, but the writers don't know how to turn that into a full-length feature in a successful way. It's especially obvious when short films are adapted to movies. Same thing happened with Lights Out.

I've even found this to be true trying to write horror stories myself. I have these great ideas for shit that's really creepy (at least I think so) but I don't think I have the ability to turn these raw ideas into a coherent narrative while retaining the creepiness throughout. It's definitely not something everybody can do, and I think too many filmmakers/writers who don't have that ability are trying to do it anyway and failing.

>>
>>19068427
>Implying the horrors of war and the evil men do isn't far spookier than any ghost
>>
To be scary is a seriously rare and meaningful feat for a movie - and I think there should be more of an in-depth conversation on the topic, instead of this gormless shitposting.

>Tarnation
Arguably one of the greatest autobiographical docs ever made, I challenge you to get into this and not to get out feeling severly damaged in your ability to think of life as anything but a series of horrible discoveries and traumatic coincidences - with the added bonus of all this shit being a bit more real than Gummo.

>The Borderlands/Final Prayer
The best found footage to be released after the Blair Witch Project, it deals directly with the underlying philosophical theme of horror - our ability to interface with the unknown and create meanings about/around it - and our ways to approach it; the dialogue in the second half of the movie is probably the most meta I've ever heard in a horror without it altering the naturalness of the scene and plot in any way. The ending is also brutal enough on its own to warrant a watch in the dark.

>The Nightmare
One of the most polarizing films to have been discussed on here: I personally found it to be a magisterial and terrifying narrative on sleep paralysis, but I didn't know it was supposed to be a documentary - and, frankly, I don't care; physical, empirical reality is only a part of the wider realm of actuality/Being, and there's plenty of space inside it for beautiful, convincing pseudo-lies.

These are three of the scariest films I've seen lately, honorable mentions go to
>Noroi The Curse
>Occult
>Custodes Bestiae
>Across the River
>I Can See You
>The House With the Laughing Windows
>Troll Hunter
>Citadel
>The Descent
>Cannibal Holocaust
>Brand Upon the Brain
>Sombre
>Resolution
>The Bay
>Zero Day

And countless others I've forgot

>The pagan "god" turned out to just be an over sized worm
Kinda disappointing tbqh, I was expecting more considering all the ghosts and shit.
>>
>>19068659
Well, I think it's more than a worm - at the very least, if we're to scrutinize the information we gather throughout the movie, it's at least an
over sized, millennia old worm with the ability to organically influence the behaviour of higher multiple lifeforms like humans (simultaneously, I'll'add), using symbols taken from their linguistic/cultural subconscious, visions, feelings and suggestions - not a mean feat for a worm
Besides, why not a giant worm? Or a giant peacock, for the matter; the way we conceptualize and "reappropriate" the appearances of the Unknown is a matter for anthropology and mithology, mere academia when confronted with the fact that this kind of forms is merely some kind of GUI our species uses the come at terms with what they can't explain/envision.
>>
>>19068685
I mean, granted I wasn't expecting Crom Crauch himself to show up on video and be like "sup fegits, you came to the wrong cave" but idunno, I just found the "get digested nerds" ending after all the buildup a little lackluster.
>>
>>19068699
Get what you're saying, yeah. I'd have expected something a bit more articulate too. Still, made the ending all the more brutal and gutwrenching - which was definitely appreciated, in this era of movies that need some kind of fucking resolution every fucking time.
>>
>>19068730
Don't get me wrong, I thought the movie was great, it had an excellent sense of pacing and constantly unnerving atmosphere. In that sense it was very much like The Witch only in found footage form.

I hate that most horror movies these days are dozens of cheap jumpscares you can see coming from a mile away because they play the building "jumpscare" music.
>>
>>19066855
100% this
>>
>>19065482
Oh shut up, edgelord. What are you, 12?
>>
>>19068457
Same, except i did end up finishing it. Took me 3 sittings because I kept getting bored as fuck. The fact that people recommend it as horror shows their total lack of depth, it's nothing more than a surrealist arthouse movie. The fact that there are some weird looking creatures and some strange noises in the movie don't make it horror.
>>
>>19066871
You're right, it isn't a horror movie at all.

The film is basically the perfect example of surrealism, the quintessential form of the genre in movie medium.
>>
>>19068767
>>19068775
Agree with you anons, though only in part - it's not a horror movie per se, it's something well settled in a long tradition of American weirdness; Naked Lunch, The Process, Stan Brakhage as well as Kenneth Anger, the conceptual and artistic inspirations for Eraserhead were floating in the aether for years. A guy came along, picked up on them and delivered a stunning, if a bit conceptually mutilated (though I haven't seen it again in a long time, so grain of salt and all), beast of a movie.
It's much more existentialist and generally "weird" (though saying that about movies is risible) than it is a "pure" horror movie.

This was the first found footage horror film I've watched. It was scary when I started thinking about the film at night after watching it.

It's not a modern masterpiece or anything, but the silent bits with the creatures that are so dark that it's hard to make anything out, I appreciate it. Gave me some spooks.

You know what movie I really wanted to like when it came out? The Fourth Kind. I remember seeing the trailers for it and thinking "Oh my shit, that looks fucking terrifying! Goddamn aliums!"

And then I saw it and it was a fucking mess. Any good spooky movies you guys can recommend with ayy lmaos in them? I've heard that Fire in the Sky is decent.

I feel like Eraserhead is 80% atmosphere, and I think for some people it doesn't really sync with. Like for me, I was uncomfortable and fascinated the entire time I watched it. The absurdity of it all mixed with how dour and smothered everything was just made me squirm.

But I have friends that just can't tune into that atmosphere at all, and without that, I can see why you'd think it's just a boring movie. It kind of operates on you being tuned into the same frequency that it's on.

Not saying "kek u don't understand casul," but more like, you can't expect it to have a traditional structure narratively or make complete sense. It's just not that sort of movie. Things just happen and you either think "Well that was fucking weird, what the hell," or you think "Who gives a shit, wonder what else is on."
>>
Anybody else just not get scared by films at all? I watch horror films more for the special effects and the sometimes interesting ideas/themes/characters/plots. The only things that can actually scare (not startle) me are usually short, random things in films that usually aren't even horror films. Like the cannibals' basement in The Road, when the group visits the cave in Ravenous (GREAT film, 10/10 recommend to anyone), a few scenes in Mysterious Skin, the killing fields in...The Killing Fields, etc.

That said, spoopiest movie to watch alone in the dark...I dunno, Jacob's Ladder? Videodrome?

Fire in the Sky's got some great moments. Tries just a little too hard to be a serious deep movie though.

>The only things that can actually scare (not startle) me are usually short, random things in films that usually aren't even horror films.
Same. It's rare for an actual horror film to scare me or creep me out, usually it's just moments in other kinds of films/shows. For instance, I'm rewatching Twin Peaks before i watch the new season, and that show clearly isn't horror, but there are so many moments in there that scare/creepy me out more than almost anything else I've watched. And it's generally just small, simple things. Like one scene where Bobby and his douchey friend are talking to Leo in the woods at night, and out of nowhere Bobby gets a horrified look on his face and goes "Who's that?!" and the camera shows a man in all black and a mask standing about 50 feet away behind a tree, watching them. That was seriously the creepiest thing I've seen in a long time, and I've even watched this entire show a couple times before. David Lynch is great with those moments of not-really-horror things that horrify you.

Really? I loved The 4th Kind. Thought it was creepy as fuck, mainly because of the actual footage mixed in with the reenactments. Of course to my disappointment I ended up looking into it and finding out that the original footage and story was a bunch of bullshit, so that sucked, but yeah

Anyone who watches horror movies post-1999 should honestly kill themselves. all the best and most creative horror films came out before the year 1995. Instead of posting your garbage CGI fest with typical jump scares and boring as fuck characters, maybe you should all start posting actual good movies.

I will be making ones for each decade. Everything from 30's-90's.

Here is my 1970's.

It's funny how Halloween manages to be the most mediocre film on that list. I understand that it's influential and a first of it's kind (even though Texas Chainsaw Massacre did most of it first and did it better) but with all the shit that came after it really devalues what made it so cool an original in the first place.

Anything with blood in it isn't scary. Gore/zombies aren't eerie or atmospheric. Only 12 year olds think violence = scary.

Scary is when something is eerie and makes you feel nervous. Scary is genuine fear, not a killer with a knife, or a monster with fangs. That's not what scary is, those aren't horror movies. That's like going to the zoo and calling lions "horror" because they have claws and sharp teeth. Gore isn't scary.

Horror movies are supposed to be eerie and spooky. Once you bring in chainsaws and guns and aliens it's not horror anymore. Those aren't eerie.

Sinister started out great, but it fucked up halfway through

Started out genuinely spooky, and the films of the murders themselves were also downright unnerving. But they betrayed the principle element of horror, like so many "scary movies" do nowadays, by explaining and revealing ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING

Sinister would have been 1000x better if they kept it ambiguous as to whether the murderer was an actual human/series of humans or a supernatural force.Instead what happened is that halfway through they were like OH YEAH SHIT, IT'S TOTALLY A BOOGEYMAN, WHO'S LIKE, AN ANCIENT SUMERIAN GOD OR SOME SHIT, AND WHOOOOOAAA LOOK AT ALL THESE GHOST KIDS RUNNING THROUGH THE HOUSE OH MAN NOW LOOK THE DAUGHTER IS THE KILLER WHOOAAAAA FAKE BLOOD SPLASHED ALL OVER THE WALLS

Had great potential, fucking tossed it all away 40 minutes in
