You should read the comic. As far as I'm aware, Zack Snyder changed as little as he could, only cutting out certain things due to time contraints. Any message you're picking up on here will likely be clearer in the comic.

I don't understand what's so weird about this. It's mostly little subtle touches that helps expand the story's universe and characters along with their ambitions, themes, and inspirations. If you're aware of the Watchmen lore or backstory or whatever these things aren't so much of a surprise. Though I can understand why someone who just got into it would think otherwise
