I don't think they're hiding anything down there. It's just where they keep old documents most of which I doubt are interesting at all. The word "secret" in the name "Vatican Secret Archives" has more the meaning private rather than something confidential.

I've honestly seriously thought about becoming a priest just to try to get access to this.

Just a guess and random things I've heard over the years:
