That's because the US patent office is a joke, and so is the nut that submitted the patents. You can literally take a shit, put it on a piece of bread, and submit it as a patent to the US patent office. Depending on how good of a mood they are in, you can get yourself a genuine Shit Sandwich (TM) patent.
I believe there's patents for time machines and other science fiction shit too.
