Planes fly close to the north pole all the time. Usually traveling in a straight line on a map from point a to point b is inefficient on a round surface, so flight paths usually look curved and sometimes go way further north than you would think. From Chicago to germany, you end up going clear over greenland. Going straight to northern russia would take you further north, but as for going directly north there is a lot of interference due to the magnetic poles and the dispersal of solar debris.
