I've been wondering this all day after visiting /x/ and /r/futurology where I found Google is trying to make people immortal before its founders kick the bucket.

Forever isn't mortally comprehensible, so it made me feel kind of upset that the nature of existence is a huge catch 22. I mean obviously our physical matter will exist forever if proton decay hypothesis isn't real, even long after the supposed heat death of the universe. Our consciousness is another matter entirely. Still, it made me realize eternal life sounds just as terrifying, or perhaps not terrifying but hard to comprehend, as nonexistence. How would you guys cope with living literally forever? I feel like I couldn't handle it unless it included being incapable of having these feelings or being able to "reincarnate" every now and then by erasing all memories I had prior.

At the same time, I'd like to think there's more after death/don't want to die and wish Google all the insane luck it would take to accomplish immortality soon. I don't know if I want to live forever, but I'd like to have the time to come to that decision myself, if that makes sense.

I personally wouldn't want to live forever. I think if it happens, most people will realize they want to die after two or three hundred years told.

I'm not sure if itll be possible to live physically forever, but what if we are able to put our consciousness into a simulation? Like virtual reality. So many people would gladly do that if it meant they could have whatever life they want.

The issue is how you are viewing time.

Eternity is not a process but a state. It's beyond our comprehension because it is something we have never experienced in this form.

When we die and eventually leave this state, it will feel completely normal for us to return to our former selves, our eternal selves.

The issue is also the monotony of our lives. Eternity working a shitty job or shit posting on 4chan would indeed be hell. But this is hell, here we are.

Death is the escape of hell, either to be reincarnated or to ascend to a higher plane of existence.

I feel like people would be okay with living indefinitely.

Immortality's boons are portrayed as loneliness and the like when there's a single character that has it. If an entire country or sizable portion of the world were immortal, we'd have a sort of unspoken social contract to stick around for one another, I imagine.

Thanks for the response. I've come to realize both eternity and oblivion are equally incomprehensible.
>>
Given the choice between being alive forever or dead forever I would pick alive forever. It may get monotonous at times, but at least you can do something rather than nothing.

As far as I can tell that´s exactly what happend and will continue to happen forever.

A species achieves immortality and omnipotence. Soon after they get bored and create a simulation to divert them from it.

The question is how deep this rabit hole is.

You do not want the burden of immortality, thankfully God alleviated that from us.

There's literally no answer that makes sense in the long term.
If we disappear eventually then everything you ever did was meaningless, and if you live forever no matter what it's also kinda meaningless.
It's pretty funny.

Look at Methuselah. Then think about always getting what you want. There was a Twilight Zone where a convict thinks he's in heaven. Until he realizes, always getting what you want, and nothing else, is pretty fucked. He's in hell.

I DID NOT. That's a fucking lie. XDDDD
