1984, the author was affiliated with freemasonry

"But the whole universe is outside us. Look at the stars! Some of them are a million light-years away. They are out of our reach forever."

"What are the stars?" said O'Brien indifferently. "They are bits of fire a few kilometers away. We could reach them if we wanted to. Or we could blot them out. The earth is the center of the universe. The sun and the stars go round it."

Winston made another convulsive movement. This time he did not say anything. O'Brien continued as though answering a spoken objection:

"For certain purposes, of course, that is not true. When we navigate the ocean, or when we predict an eclipse, we often find it convenient to assume that the earth goes round the sun and that the stars are millions upon millions of kilometers away. But what of it? Do you suppose it is beyond us to produce a dual system of astronomy? The stars can be near or distant, according as we need them. Do you suppose our mathematicians are unequal to that? Have you forgotten doublethink?"

You will not be able to reason with a flat earther OP.

Show them a photo, they will say it was photoshopped.

Show them a physics proof, they will say it's wrong.

The "problem" with the whole round/flat thing is that for people who have never been on a high altitude flight, who struggle to understand the concepts of physics and mathematics, and who believe there are reasons that the people who do understand those things would not want the rest of the world to know the shape of the Earth - there is simply no way you can possibly argue with them.

>>
>>18983746
I seriously doubt you even understand what country you're looking at, in addition, you keep whining at people to focus on your statement, but that's a stupid desire to have because your statement in itself is stupid; you essentially just said "With no relevant expertise or proof whatsoever, I think that the earth may be bigger than we've been told, purely because of a perspective trick that came from looking at a slice of the Earth's curve in a rectangular image."

What the fuck do you expect someone to say to that? You want someone to rationally debate your stupid fucking anecdotal statement based in ignorance as if you're making some kind of hard hitting point?

I'm not annoyed with you because of your statement; I'm annoyed with you because you're actually challenging people to argue you with you about it and accusing them of not engaging your stupid statement, and it's fucking preposterous.

Not a flat rather but I did hear at least ONE scientifically viable argument.

Gravity bends light waves, scientific fact. When you see a ship go over the horizon the light is just being affected by the Earth'z gravity.

I mean I'm no physicist and idk if the earth is massive enough to cause it. But first plausible thing ive heard on the topic.
>>
>>18987028
Yeah, no, that's not plausible at all

It takes an immense gravitational pull to bend light. We're talking black holes and neutron stars. The earth doesn't have anywhere close to enough gravity to bend light. This is quantifiable.

Furthermore, if gravity was bending light you'd be able to see more of the ship, not less.
>>
>>18987028
The Earth doesn't have nearly that much of a gravitational effect on spacetime, and if it did, we'd all be crushed.
>>
>>18987049
>It takes an immense gravitational pull to bend light. We're talking black holes and neutron stars.

Scientists have observed lensing around our sun. That's how they proved that gravitational lensing was real.
>>
>>18987049
>gravity bends light

You know what else gravity bends? The surfaces of planets.
>>
>>18987068
No, they proved it was real by lensing around a cluster of black holes.
>>
>>18987028
They don't believe in gravity, that would require a round planet. A flat disc with gravity would result in us perceiving the flat areas farther from the center as a slope.
>>
>>18987078
But that's wrong.

>>
>>18987071

>>
seriously the picture looks fake
>>
The Earth is round, but if you think you could make out cornfields and roads from an elevation where you can also see Earth's curvature, you're fucking retarded and should learn what lenses are.
>>
>>18987068

This is true, it was during an eclipse in 1919 and repeated in 1922.

That being said, the sun has 333,000x the mass of Earth and is 93 million miles away. That's enough to allow for barely observing light bending under the right conditions, namely a solar eclipse.

Although of course that all depends on believing that the sun is larger than the Earth and is located that far away. Thing that a flat Earther will conveniently tell you are "just lies" with no proof other than a 200 pixel jpeg infographic.
>>
>>18987049
Earth can bend light, it just doesn't bend it very much.

Your article's only references are: Guinness Book of World Records 1997.

It also didn't say they circumnavigated. Only that they went to the southpole, then the northpole, then back home. Plot out their routes on a map, and you'll realise that for an article that only references "guiness world records", where that reference makes no mention of these details is awfully suspect. Why are they trying so hard to hide the truth? Must be fun to get paid to spread disinformation.

You're making the mistake of using non-reproducible scientific results as a basis for your argument. You can't just walk over to a black hole and observe the light bending, (((someone))) has to tell you how it works. The result is that you believe light needs an immense amount of force to bend.

Now if you consider that the globe earth could be an international conspiracy to delegitimize Christianity, (((scientific data))) becomes just another tool to strengthen that claim.

I'm a pilot. I've flown directly over the north pole on a route from ATL to PEK (beijing). Here's a pic of the seatback flight map from a United 747, where I spent the entire flight with my face pressed to the window. Amazing scenery from Hudson Bay north through Baffin Island and on. It was July of 2008.

When we crossed the pole (as indicated in the flight map) the icon of the airplane began to flip back and forth, not knowing exactly which way it was pointing. I thought that was really cool and shot video of it trying to establish it's direction over the course of about 3 mins. Once we get a little bit of distance from magnetic north, the icon settled down and pointed toward Beijing.

>Accepting facts however uncomfortable they may be and living your life to the best of your ability is not intrinsically racist, climb down from your gender studies course horse and see that some people don't see the world as you do and be a nice tolerant liberal and accept that fact, life will go a lot easier if you accept the fact that having different opinions does not make you weaker it makes you stronger because you can learn from those that have different opinions and see why they came to those conclusions THEN refute them or mold them into your life.

I know it's TL;DR but just my life experience.

This looks like a promo image, most like shopped to get the best 'look'. Is this from a video or are there other pics from this set? Also, how high up is this spacecraft? That should tell you a lot about what kind of curve to expect.

Many of the pics from ISS use an extreme fisheye lens (to both take in a wider field of view, which is understandable given the vista, and perhaps to also reinforce the curvature of the Earth). But I doubt that from the relatively low height the ISS orbits that the curvature would be very noticeable by the naked eye, it would more likely feel like you were hovering over a huge plain that extends in all directions. You are simply not high up enough to see the Earth as a huge globe at the ISS height.

all the flat earth pics show the sun being a lampshade type torch that shines down in a circle around the earth during day time. during summer it moves closer to the centre in its daily rotations, keeping arctic in 24h sun. in winter it moves towards the outside of flat earth and lights up south pole. your image shows this

This "theory" is popular solely among basement dwelling folk who never actually traveled anywhere by an airplane and skipped school a lot or simply didbt pay attention.
Literally every "clue" that they got can be easily debunked even by a smart little kid.

Among alk the possible conspiracy theories going on, I find this one the most stupid and ignorant of them all, simply because all these people are free to challenge their beliefs and actually get a flight high enough to see the shaping of Earth.
But none of them will ever do it because they are in fact basement dwelling rednecks who got no idea about physics or anything "scientific" at all.

how do flat earthers explain the daily cycle? eclipses? where does the sun go?
>>
>>18991394
how do you?
>>
>>18991402
The earth rotates away from the sun for a moment of time and light coming over the earth is projected on the Moon while the Moon rotates the earth projecting the light in different ways during each of the phases.

Sometimes the moon gets in the way of the sun while rotating and cause an eclipse.

are you presenting a 3rd model or do you fail to understand the globe-model which you seem to try defending? Seems like you fail to answer the questions you are asking other people

How does it do it when it's spinning at 1000 mph at it's axis and 67.000 mph around the sun while keeping the water in place and not fucking up the gravity for animals.
>>
>>18992007
I'm not sure what you're asking.

The earth spins at 1,000 mph at the equator, but it's 24,000 miles long at the equator, so it takes an entire day for the earth to finish a revolution. It's why there's 24 hours in a day.

Yes, there's centrifugal force at the equator (zero at the poles). The centrifugal force, at maximum, is tiny compared to the force of gravity. This means if you stand at a pole and weigh yourself, it will be slightly more then if you weighed yourself at the poles.

The difference is small enough that it doesn't "fuck up the animals."

In fact, you can fly on a plane, going north and south, and you can watch the scale change. Same with going east and west, either for or against the spin of rotation. If you're going east, you're adding your speed to the rotation, which means more centrifugal force, which means you weight a small amount less.

The centrifugal force of the earth as it goes around the sun is similarly insignificant compared to gravity. Just because it's a high velocity it doesn't mean it's a high centrifugal force. It takes a full year just to complete one revolution.

>>
>>18992863
Anon, the air is also moving with the earth. So next time you're on an airplane, toss a tennis ball up in the air. If it doesn't go flying backwards at 500 mph, try to figure out why.
