Well, a White Knight is someone that saves somebody, and the original for the person that comes to save /x/ from itself called a pink knight for no reason I know of, see image. But the term pink knight really bugged some people and various other colors were batted about. In the end it became plaid in a please-everyone-and-please-no-one compromise. I still see the pink knight image used btw, so <shrug>.
