I do seem to be able to type ä-type letters in the text file, so I doubt that that is it. Thanks though.

The new letters are inserted with the current active encoding, which of course shows it as expected. The old character is in the old encoding, but shown with the active encoding. E.g. the small a umlaut in Windows-1252 has the byte code e4 hex. If the current encoding is any unicode encoding, it may decode it together with the following m to some character in a chinese or japanese code plane.
