Aum Shinryiko was a Japanese doomsday cult. Their belief was that the world would end and the cult was destined to rise from the ashes and run the new world.

The leader (I forget his name) was a conman his whole life and it started when he started selling books saying he had powers and could give others powers with training. This eventually lead to a following. He even recruited by having anime propaganda!

It was a weird time in Japan spirituality, the old religions were going away and people needed something. His also helped grow his numbers. A lot of highly educated people and scientists were in the cult. They would produce drugs and eventually...chemical weapons. In the 90s there was a gas attack in a subway tunnel carried out by the cult and is cosidered a terrorist attack.

They even started to get political followers and had ties to shady Russian connections. If I remember right they even almost had a nuclear bomb.

I believe the cult is still around, all this took place in the 80-90s but it may have a new name
