countless. It's a poor "cryptid" though. I would not apply that word to it since it was just an unconfirmed location for an existing type of animal, not an unconfirmed animal.

i've heard that western scientists believed mountain gorillas were a myth perpetrated by ignorant superstitious africans until they actually found them. if you had never heard of a gorilla and heard a vague description from a native it'd sound a lot like a yeti or sasquatch.

Partially true. The problem is that by the point europeans actually went in and investigated, there were no gorillas left.
The stories implied that there were tons over tons of gorillas in the mountains, to the point that towns had to move because some mountain gorillas moved nearby.
There were no gorillas left, for some reason. So no one believed them, until in very early 1900, a dude actually shot two mountain gorillas, and a german museum classified it as a new species.

Not really a cryptid as much as a creature that actually existed but was pretty much extint, and no one really cared at all. If the natives had guns, cameras, or if the europeans actually cared to look out of a safari, then it wouldve been discovered decades before. Besides, its pretty much just a gorilla.
