Ancient Stone Carvings Confirm Comet Struck Earth in 10950BC

For years, researchers had suspected that an unexplained reduction in global temperatures during a period known as the Younger Dryas could have been caused by a comet impact - an event that was thought to have wiped out the woolly mammoth while also sparking the beginnings of civilization.

Now a team of experts at the University of Edinburgh believe that they may have found early documented evidence of this event in the form of symbols engraved on ancient stone pillars at Gobekli Tepe - a site in southern Turkey with important historical significance.

Using a computer programme to map how the constellations would have appeared over Turkey at the time the carvings were made, the researchers discovered that the symbols seemed to confirm that a swarm of comet fragments had hit the Earth at the same time the temperature dropped.

"I think this research, along with the recent finding of a widespread platinum anomaly across the North American continent virtually seal the case in favour of (a Younger Dryas comet impact)," said study leader Dr Martin Sweatman. "It appears Gobekli Tepe was, among other things, an observatory for monitoring the night sky."

Discovery Of 14,000-Year-Old Settlement In Canada Could Rewrite North American History

The ancient stories of the indigenous Heiltsuk Nation people say that their ancestors sheltered on a mysterious strip of coastline in Canada during the last Ice Age. Thanks to a recent discovery of a 14,000-year-old settlement, science is now reaffirming those claims.

The discovery was made last year along the Central Coast of British Columbia on Triquet Island. Teams of archaeologists from the Hakai Institute, University of Victoria, and local First Nations found the remains of charcoal, tools, fish hooks, spears used to hunt marine mammals, and even a hand drill used for lighting fires.

Based on the analysis of charcoal found, it’s estimated the settlement was established around 13,613 to 14,086 years ago. This makes it one of the oldest human settlements in North America. It also means it's twice as old as the invention of the wheel, three times older than the Pyramids of Giza, and thousands of years before all of the ice age megafauna went extinct.

Archeologist Alisha Gauvreau, a PhD student from the University of Victoria and a scholar with the Hakai Institute, will be presenting her team's findings at the Society for American Archeology conference in Vancouver this week.

Murder, Sex and Obsession: Retracing the Footsteps of a Yeti Hunter

Renowned Spanish zoologist Jordi Magraner, one morning in August 2002, was found with his throat cut in Pakistan’s Chitral region, where he’d lived for 15 years. Magraner had been searching for the mythical barmanu – as locals call the yeti. The morning after his death, the newspaper headlines all said the same thing: “Yeti hunter found murdered.”

Seven years later, no one had been convicted for his killing – nor has anyone since – and rumours still swirled around the 44-year-old Spaniard’s slaying, with some newspapers hinting at the involvement of secret government agents, others that it was a crime of passion. Even the few reported facts of his life seemed to have mythical dimensions; revered by the Kalash, an ancient pagan people of the Hindu Kush who had buried his body with honour, Magraner had also been involved in humanitarian convoys in Afghanistan as well as with Alliance Française in Peshawar.

There were also suggestions he had had dealings with Ahmad Shah Massoud, the region’s legendary anti-Taliban resistance leader. But to one man, unravelling the mystery and, indeed, the marvels of the zoologist’s life and death would prove as dangerous as it was irresistible. It would mean retracing the footsteps of the yeti hunter into Pakistan’s northern valleys – the region that, in 2009, was the operational base of al-Qaeda.

Thursday: Climate Change & Environment/ America's Stonehenge

During the first half, Dr. Peter Ward, PhD, discussed the state of the planet including the demise of the Great Barrier Reef, melting ice caps, and recent discoveries in the Mariana Trench and Antarctica. In the latter half, former airline pilot Dennis Stone detailed the mystery of America's Stonehenge.


Friday: Deception & Lies

Retired US Marshal Mark McClish joined guest host Connie Willis to discuss deception and how we can protect ourselves from lies and those who tell them. Open Lines followed.

Expanded Perspectives: Up in Smoke

On Christmas Eve 1945, the Sodder family home burned down; the cause was traced to defective wiring, despite the fact that the family's Christmas tree lights were still on after the fire started. Four of the Sodder's children survived, but the five middle children came up missing, and no trace of their remains were found. Believing that the fire was a cover for the abduction of their children, George and Jennie Sodder spent a fortune on detectives to investigate. However, the case was never solved, and to this day no one knows what happened to the missing children.

A move to Bannack, Montana, and election as sheriff of the area promised to restore his career and reputation. This fresh start at the bottom of Plummer's pan would prove to be just a flash, as the townsfolk would soon suspect his connection to the robberies and murders allegedly committed by a gang of Road Agents who came to be known as "The Innocents" and many speculated he might even have been the mastermind behind the purported crime wave. But was Plummer actually guilty, or just guilty by association and a victim of circumstance and mob mentality? Whatever the truth of the matter, Sheriff Henry Plummer eventually found himself at the end of his rope.
