I think you are confused with the concept of "sect" in hinduism. It isn't like orthodox vs catholic or sunni vs shias, Hinduism has been a wet dream for "philosophers" and "gistorians" for so long that they absolutely love to classify it and dissect it as much as possible.
Anyways, this isn't about my beliefs, nor do I think I'm educated enough in hinduism to debate on it, so I'd like it if we drop this.

Djinns aren't scary, the concept of "djinn" is. The process he mentioned was quite scary in itself,to complete is a completely different matter.
Oh and I should mention, there are LOTS of "black magicians for hire" in India. Really. Most of them are exploiting simple minded old fools, but I'm convinced some of them are the real deal. Their hexes are quite a nuisance and I've seen a whole family destroyed due to such a hex. Makes you wonder.

No, the years I spent in India gave me the impression that - like Christians in America - most have a firm faith but no real education in the philosophy and writings of their religion. The core is a mashup of general cultural knowledge, local mythology, and media portrayal. They read the Gita the same way Americans read the Bible; that is they don't but they have a few select verses they know through hearing repeatedly.
