There's been a thousand threads of "No for realsies guys this is part of Cicada" But I never see any actual discussion on the topic. So what do you think Cicada 3301 was? What's the latest news about it?
Personally it's been awhile since I last looked it up so I'm not entirely caught up. But I was under the impression they stopped doing it. I assume because it was originally for high class hackers but the surface web took it and ran away with it

It's a whistleblower organization.

I got in but only at level 5. I got a phone call (pretending to be my ISP) and a demo after that

Do you have the thread link?

Yeah, the whole puzzle thing occurring this year is bullshit. Surprised people are chasing something without PGP encryption, and with how non-Cicada and badly presented it feels
That being said, it's implied this email is real: http://uncovering-cicada.wikia.com/wiki/The_Leaked_Email but since there is no way of knowing (no PGP) it's up in the air. I also remember reading an article a long time ago about someone who apparently made it somewhat far and ended up trying to design software called CAKES for protection of whistleblowers, but everyone ended up becoming tired of the project and becoming less willing to finish it.
In 2016 they released an image with a cryptographically signed message that Liber Primus was the way, insisting on finishing that puzzle. No one has really completed decrypting Liber Primus, you can check out the work done online, or at least no one who has shared the remaining work
