Yes, where else would they have placed the "Jesus, King of the Jews" sign. It was a custom to place the perpetrators crime above their heads when crucified. Evidence for Jesus' execution by crucifiction is that it was a humiliating death for someone who lead a religious movement, jews probably wouldn't have made up that death if they wanted to claim their guy was a messiah. His crucifiction is mention right from Paul's letters in the 50s AD, so it's not a later embellishment either.

If anything it's what made Christianity more popular among gentiles, because the messiah dying without achieving anything temporal was the opposite of what they expected (a divine king). The early Jesus followers' attempts to explain why their leader died appealed more the gentiles who didn't have any such qualms because they didn't know what the jewish messiah was meant to be. Plus a divine hero dying and coming back to life wasn't at all out of the ordinary in hellenistic mythology.
