It's a fucking sensationalist hoax to get clicks. And a pretty annoying one too, because all the young parents I know completely ate this shit up and are shitting their pants over some internet cult wanting to goad their kids into suicide, even though there's no evidence for it existing. No kids were found with whales etched into their skins, and mysteriously no one was able to find evidence of the Blue Whale game by checking their internet activity. Every image, every teen that offed themselves and posted whale pictures, all of it happened months after media picked this shit up. So it's kind of hoax-turned-LARPing.

But that's probably not the answer you are expecting, OP. So let me pull some shit out of my ass like the media does that you'll hopefully find more satisfying.

Blue Whale is the KGB's most recent equivalent of MKULTRA/Project Monarch. It's trauma-induced brainwashing powered by gamification. They target young kids because it just works better on them, and they are less likely to speak and quit because the blackmailing is enough to keep them in check. They won't be able to realize that they are just empty threats and nothing will happen if they quit.

So they do the usual tricks, pain, loud noises, terror, sleep-deprivation. The twist is that the subject undergoes all of this willingly, because they are trained to think of this as a game, to develop the achievement mentality and the need to "win". And by making sure the subject doesn't talk about it with anyone but their "admin" and fellow subjects, and by setting the tasks to be done at night, they mess with the subject's perception of reality. They keep real life and the game separate. If everything goes well by the end of the 50th day they will be pushed to the point where they disassociate, and if the test was a success, they will be ready to off themselves. And if not, well, learn from it, fine-tune the method, and try again with new subjects. It's not like they can't cover failures up.
