Don't do the later. Spend a lot of time going through the deck and taking note of every detail on each card. They each are highly symbolic and it's nice to have your own intuition. Most meanings of the cards are shallow and lame.

familiarize yourself with the cards and their meanings, look at the artwork and decide on personal meanings and just get close to the cards basically so you'll know what they mean when you see them together in spreads

There are planets, constellations, and elements... The relationships among these based on position in the sky, etc. is crucial to understanding the tarot. Knowledge of Qabalah doesn't hurt, either.
