Yeah there's some online organization calling themselves the Illuminati (so-and-so's) and it sounds like you can basically buy a membershippp. it has no lineage linking to the original Illuminati (obviously) and they sound insane. Original Illuminati were about enlightenment and secret societies to keep from being persecuted for thought-crimes or whatever.

The actual order is long dead but the memory still lives on because of the fear and threat it brought upon nobles of HRE at the time. The philosophy of the illuminati order was proto-communist. They wanted religion dead and man equal across the board. They infiltrated the traditional observance lodges of Freemasonry first, because TO lodges did away with the mystical elements creeping into Freemasonry at the time of the enlightenment. Of course after they had infiltrated Freemasonry they started to add grade structures and initiations with a little mystic flair in order to attract more members. One important thing to keep in mind was that Adam W. hated the Jesuits and yet he modeled his order almost identically after the Jesuit order. The aim of infiltration within society especially in high positions was still the same. And just like the Jesuits each member was to only report and fully know the member over him. This member would "confess" just like the Jesuits, and turn over records of every little thing he did throughout the day to his superior. It was Freemasons themselves who fought back and brought down the Illuminati, in particular the lodges of The Three Globes and other Rosicrucian flavored appendant bodies.

Now even though the original order collapsed, members fled the German principalities for other places. These members brought their ideas with them, and many were involved in early socialist movements. There are connections with ex-Illuminati members and the revolutions in France and in Italy. So it is plausible that an Illuminati order created from old members still exist but it is highly doubtful. Most likely there are various groups that carry on the atheist, communist views of the Illuminati, but they no longer reside in Freemasonry. However, I do find it interesting that the Grand Orient of France in 1877 removed the bible and decided to allow in atheists. Did new illuminati members create the great schism in Freemasonry?

As part of the landmarks of Freemasonry, no atheists are allowed in and there is no active engagement in politics. It was the Grand Orient that decided to revoke these landmarks. This schism broke Freemasonry almost in half between the UGLE lodges and the GOdF which regulated most continental lodges. I still doubt if they could have re-infiltrated Freemasonry, but if they did the Grand Orient of France would have been the most likely of targets since many ex-members fled to France. After all, the allowing of membership to atheists and the allowing of lodges to engage in politics is something the original Illuminati would have supported.
