Something that I hate is when they write and say shit that crappily foreshadows something bad happening.

>>18884121

Ok retard

>whom thought leaving things vividly to the readers imagination was good enough.

Thats the fucking point, the monsters are supposed to be so alien and different that we can't even comprehend them

Now all my tales are based on the fundamental premise that common human laws and interests and emotions have no validity or significance in the vast cosmos-at-large. To me there is nothing but puerility in a tale in which the human form—and the local human passions and conditions and standards—are depicted as native to other worlds or other universes. To achieve the essence of real externality, whether of time or space or dimension, one must forget that such things as organic life, good and evil, love and hate, and all such local attributes of a negligible and temporary race called mankind, have any existence at all. Only the human scenes and characters must have human qualities. These must be handled with unsparing realism, (not catch-penny romanticism) but when we cross the line to the boundless and hideous unknown—the shadow-haunted Outside—we must remember to leave our humanity and terrestrialism at the threshold.
— H. P. Lovecraft, in note to the editor of Weird Tales, on resubmission of "The Call of Cthulhu"

>Every single fucking angle change that carries a reveal, no matter how slight, is accompanied by a stupid sound making every angle change comical

Yeah, this pisses me off. Like I love mirror shots in horror movies... When done right. Like if there's a noise with it, it ruins the atmosphere. I like not knowing when a reveal is happening. Or even missing it the first time. I want to be in the place of the mc. The silly synth violin whine every time a reveal the mc doesn't see ruins all immersion into the story for me. Not a deal breaker 100% of the time, but it's a pretty serious issue for me.

Also
>don't call cops
>or if they do, 911 call is dropped
>no one comes until hours later after everyone is dead
Shit, a friend dared me to call 911 as a kid. I did, and the police were over in about 20 minutes.

Yeah I hate how everything has to be super dark and edgy to be considered scary now. Its easy to make something mediocre 'scary' if you put it in a dark environment and cover it with over the top effects, but think about the first IT. The original Pennywise (Tim Curry) had sharp teeth and would pop out of a sewer grate yeah, but he didn't really need all that, He was scary when he was just being a goofy clown in the library in broad daylight as well.

Sorry.. forgot I posted in this thread.

Here is the vid I was talking about:

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=wIu7GanVRH8

>warning: graphic abortion vid showing dead babies and angry white man NSFW

basically dude had a group of people leaving "beast bills" all over the country for a few weeks. Pic related. Bills had alot of hidden info and had many people sitting bricks trying to figure out what it all ment.

Eventually people were led to a site with a timer counting down. Once it went to zero, the vid above was shown.

Internet was literally like "wtf... all that and the end game was this?"

Mad Internet proceeded to dox dude.. and that's about the time that I checked out of the soap opera so I'm not sure if anything else happened.

Dude had the Internet hanging on his every move and he blew his load over some angry anti abortion shit.

To be fair, that's plausible behavior. There's such a thing as mental inertia where you later realize that you should have just fucking stopped.
Just like the "idiot searches for shit in the antic" syndrome. It's not idiotic unless you know that it's a horror movie.
Zombies are also scary as shit from a real life perspective.

My assumption is that stories used to be made for people who can relate.
Nowadays stories are working with higher concepts and more detached audiences. That's why zombies are now cannon fodder and these "oh god what an idiot" tropes are disappearing.
>>

>>
>the monster was the protagonist all along
I think Lovecraft's The Outsider is the only time this was done well.
>>
>>18884121
Most of Lovecraft's stories don't actually rely on that as heavily as it's been memed. A lot of them are also just kind of shitty attempts to write in the style of Edgar Allen Poe, or rip offs of other stories like Frankenstein.

>>
>>18889306
It's not related to Cloverfield whatsoever.
I think the original title was "The Shelter" or something. The producers thought no one would give a shit so they attached the name Cloverfield and called it a day.

The movie however is great. Tom Goodman takes a woman into an underground bunker because of an unknown cataclysmic event that happened on the surface. For most of the movie you're wondering if there's an actual event or Tom Goodman's just psychotic.

I'm a sucker for intense, intimidating characters and Goodman fucking nails it. Definitely recommend it.
>>
>>18889325
>It's not related to Cloverfield whatsoever.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cloverfield
>While a proper sequel to the film has not yet materialized, despite years of rumors and consideration, the film did serve as the first in a series of pictures set in a common universe, which also consists of 2016's 10 Cloverfield Lane and the upcoming 2017 film God Particle.

So it's basically a movie about prolonged exposure to a madman in close quarters?
>>
>>18889335
Yea, pretty much.
And yes, there are little hints that it's the same universe, there's a gas station and a slushie type product that have the same names in both movies but the events in Cloverfield aren't referenced at all in Lane.

>For most of the movie you're wondering if there's an actual event or Tom Goodman's just psychotic.

I haven't seen this, but wouldn't just adding the Cloverfield title automatically ruin this aspect because it already confirms to the audience that the cataclysmic events from Cloverfield actually did/are happening in this world?
>>
>>18889435
It has absolutely nothing to do with the Cloverfield monster.

in like literally every Stephen King book he gets bored towards the end and randomly turns the book into a thriller in order to end it, like turning Pennywise into a giant spider or some shit. It would have honestly been scarier if Pennywise just remained as a manevolent clown spirit.

The worst thing is I see this stuff influencing other writers: where they spend the entire story or book having ~sporadic spooky things~ happen and then they just go full Giant Spider mode with it and turn it into some sort of LSD trip.

It's just not scary, because it's not believable. I don't feel scared watching Dr Who fight off an army of rabid Ood because it's not in any way relateable to me. Same with kids fighting a giant spider underground

> people still live in the haunted house after they found out it's haunted and their kids have been injured several times

I hate this one so fucking much sometimes. Sometimes the movie will take the time to establish that going to a motel is useless because "it just follows you there," or it carefully makes sure that the really intense shit hits the fan stuff happens all at once at the end and the family couldn't possibly have realized it would get that bad with the very minor things that happend before that they didn't notice, and I appreciate that. But in a lot of them they totally realize that what is happening keeps slowly getting worse and worse and already really fucked up stuff happens, and they just retardedly refuse to budge. Usually the excuse is "well there's just too much money tied up in the house, we can't leave." Bitch, you know you are going to die if you stay. If there were a gas leak and you were breathing deadly fumes, you wouldn't just say "oh well, a hotel is too expensive, nothing we can do lol," you would get the fuck out and go huddle under a bridge if you had to.

I think I got especially pissed at one scene I saw in the first season of American Horror Story back when it was first coming out, where the dad suggested that if they tightened their belts, the family of 3 could just barely afford a studio apartment and wouldn't have to stay in the spooky murder house that was actively trying to kill them, that was totally an option they had and the wife just makes this awful disgusted sneer and sarcastically says "a studio apartment? really? no way." and shoots it right down. Maybe it was supposed to be a joke, but it just made me so fucking pissed thinking there are probably rich people that are actually like this.

Nah man, don't be like that. Ouija was a terrible movie, and I set my standards pretty low

i do this all the time. if you turn on bright lights at night it's harder to go back to sleep afterwards.

most of us have a vague idea where the furniture is in our houses and have enough night vision to get by. it's not that crazy, you soft, civilized fuck.
>>
>>18886949
I think It was justified in this. The ending was shit, but the idea of something evil seeping into the town's history and making it totally fucked from the get go is pretty neat. It all depends on execution. And King landed it, but rolled his ankle immediately.
>>
>>18889146
I disagree. It was definitely a horror movie, just not rated R. Did you watch the same movie as that guy? Goodman's an absolute psycho, and sells the movie by his performance.

Poopy taste, famalam. Lovecraft focused more on building up tension and atmosphere.
