I think the general theory is that 'they', feed off negative energy and/or create negative energy for unknown reasons, and they do this via infiltrating the establishment or they have always been, and are the establishment - ie they have their hands on the levers of power. The Catholic Church, the US and Israeli governments, the EU, the British Monarchy, all the central banks and financial institutions, the media, most political parties, basically anyone with considerable power.
