Our mind, the biological predisposition of our ability to perceive, is little more than an evolutionary necessity born of a relatively cozy and sheltered three dimensional existence, never having want or need of understanding anything beyond this surface bound reality. What happens though when this limited biological computer is confronted with something so profoundly beyond its ability to comprehend? Is madness our only true salvation from a horror which, by it's very nature, cannot be known?
>never having want or need of understanding anything beyond this surface bound reality
Speak for yourself. Try telling that to theoretical/quantum physicists
More Silent Hill than Lovecraft.

Listen, lady, it's understandable to misinterpret nearly 100 year old stories written by a guy emulating a writing style that was already decades old at the time. It was a different time and people had different sensibilities.
I'm still going to call you silly, though.
This thread is great, but in my opinion, eldritch monsters shouldn't just be "humanoid with tentacles" or "mass of appendages that looks like an ugly fish". We can only see an aspect of these beings, not the real thing, it should be mind bending, bodies that defy evolution, biology, physics and logic. Something that shouldn't make any sense.
I love some of these concepts but it's kinda boring when they are drawn as something out of a resident evil game, that kind of monster is on it's own category.

Probably more like this, they follow their own logic, not our's. They need to feel alien enough.

As opposed to?

You know, 3-D beings, like you and me, and a dog and a tree and a house. Imagine the eldrichts warping like a hypercube

the coming of cthulu isnt an invasion like this, its just that all inhibitions go away and everyone on earth is overcome with madness and true chaos
Azathoth, the blind idiot god.
basically the most powerful known being in the Cthulhu mythos, the creator/father of everything eldritch
I got quite a bit to contribute.

these are all so weak. always the same familiar forms, rationalizations of what words put beyond imagination. imagination is limited by our observable reality, this whole style is so futile

I agree, it's pretty ironic that people's depictions of the "incomprehensible" are all extremely similar

What kind of idiot thought they COULD draw Azathoth?

among my many unfinished projects is a screenplay about a mission to discover the source of an inexplicable signal that begins to simultaneously broadcast into the minds of every human being on earth.
but once you start the "expedition gone bad" story, how can you give it a fresh ending? the natives are either a) trying to kill us (overdone), b) not trying to kill us (boring), or c) long dead (even more boring). so then you end up trying to make B or C more interesting by having the environment present challenges or members of the group turn on each other. but it's all been done before.
i'd like to make my aliens feel alien, but obviously when attempting to present the "unimaginable" it's rather hard to imagine what to present.
>>18855422
If they exist wouldnt they be something we couldnt comprehend and drive us insane
so makes sense that we couldnt draw or have any frame of reference to draw such a being
favourite mythos story? personally it has to be dunwich horror for me. the fusion of eldritch and invasion body horror is just perfect.

What about being saved and stuffed away like a thing put somewhere only to be forgotten. Aliens just take in humans as pets or as things to be looked at. Stuffed for decoration. Bread for fighting things like that.
