My belief is that most cryptids (Mothman, Bigfooot, Dogmen, Greys, etc.) are actually Interdimensional beings (or Demons, depending on your beliefs) They play on whatever belief system is presented and fulfill there own agenda while letting our "pattern seeking minds" fill in the blanks.
