Read up on 'Behold a Pale Horse' by Bill Cooper. Most of the first few seasons are based on this and similar books.

He drops a lot of alien conspiracy with two conceits - first, that he's personally witnessed UFO craft up close - and second, that everything he knows might be disinformation.

Oh wait, I keep forgetting season 10, I guess I sort of count it as "1-9 = classic X-Files, 10-? = neo/reboot X-Files", so I meant 7-9.

You can still find a few good ones, mostly in S7, but they just really started getting bad the later you go. Even S6 had some pretty bad ones. The Mytharc and the whole thing with Scully's baby just got utterly retarded by that point.

S10 is a mixed bag, it wasn't as bad as it could have been, but it still wasn't that great. I'd put it in maybe S7/8 tier for most of them, but the Werelizard one is funny as fuck and was written by Darin Morgan, brother of Glen Morgan who wrote more regularly for the series. It's not perfect, but it's easily the most entertaining of the lot, especially if you like X-Files humor. If you're looking for something more serious, you might not like it as much.

I heard there was one in the works. I think they could pull off something worthwhile IF they put some honest effort into it this time. The biggest disaster of S10 was making the choice to only have six goddamn episodes and making none of them really tie in together except for the first and last two. A friend described it as a "Whitman's sampler" of the X-Files and that's probably the best way to put it. If they had tried to tell a coherent story with all six episodes, they might have had something, but instead we just got jerked around a lot more. The series flopped at the end. The second movie sucked. And now with S10 being weak, they're quickly wasting the opportunities they have to ever be "good" again, let alone "great". Pulling Chris Carter off the Mytharc writing would be a good start too.

If you are going to watch the X-Files, do yourself a favor and watch it in HD on Netflix or something. The show was shot in 35MM filmstock and it looks brilliant in 1080p 16:9 format. Everything looks so crisp and the film grain just adds something.

As for the show, it is OK. But it still has its stinker episodes. A mixed bag.

It started well, then really went to hell after 4 seasons or so, and at times became parody. Millennium did the same but fell to bits before the end of it's debut season.

Masterpiece show with Season 3 being the crown jewel. You can stop at Season 5 and the movie, because after that they moved the production to Los Angeles and it just jumped the shark immediately. Some episodes crossed over into self parody at times, like the anon above said.

It picks up a bit with Robert Patrick, but still doesn't capture the old Vancourver magic of Seasons 1-5

It's kinda tl;dr for me to get into now (I'm tired as fuck), but basically it was another episode that was a little TOO cheesy and goofy. Still better than the later silly ones they tried to do, but not by much. The way they portrayed the body switches was just confusing. And then in the end, none of it supposedly happened, but some things that were altered during that warped timeline stayed the same after it was "fixed". I know some of this was done to explain away changes to sets and the like, but it felt like a lazy way to do it.

i think that people under-estimate how fucking HILARIOUS the x-files was at its best, when it really didn't take itself too seriously. mulder and scully had one of the most electric chemistry's in TV history, the way they'd just deadpan fucking everything, but it came across as just extremely believable and human... when they encounter wild stuff and joke about it, it just shows their extraordinary quality as people.
