This site is really good, it holds not only monsters but some legends as well (like the man who defeated a giwakwa with the help of a rabbit, gives me an idea for a hero Native American hero unit).

So how's progress, OP?

I'm Lumbee and in North Carolina. The only two I can think of, that I have encountered personally, are the Appalachian light-orbs and the idea of your spirit animal make a repeat appearance in your life.

The spirit animal one is easier to have happen when you basically live in a mountain range filled with everything. My friends is a deer, since he has found and nursed abandoned deer from the forest all the time. Another friend has a black bear. His is more alarming and dangerous, he has to carry a shotgun when he goes roaming Aline or with us. Garenteed, a fucking bear comes wandering over to us every time.

Mine is an Owl. Everywhere I have lived, apartments, houses, tents, no matter what, I will have an Owl start living and hanging out in the trees near by. A lot of times its right outside and Squawks all night long. Right now I actually have two living right outside my window and they are constantly fighting.
