IMAGES: SEARCHING FOR CLUES -- THE IMAGE ITSELF

Cicada uses a lot of images.

Images can be manipulated with programs like Photoshop. If I understand correctly, you must start with the original image provided by C3301 (particularly if searching for clues in the source code and other "hidden" information). So, be careful taking a secondary image off of message boards.

Photoshop lets you layer an image. Potentially background images are present that are revealed with changing the brightness, contrast, etc.

Watch just the first 1:04 minutes of this to see the background of the 2017C3301 start-image. There is an image behind it (grey-blue) with seven nested or stacked sevens (on their sides) with the cicada signal. BASICS:
TEXT: SEARCHING FOR CLUES

Any text can provide clues. The clues might be obvious or obscure. Pay close attention to:

Spelling. Mis-spellings can be important.
Capitalization. Might be a clue if you take just the capital letters.
Punctuation. Again, might be a clue.

Examples: The 2017 Start-Image has these words:
"A Fludd approches. Chart the stars.A Chord of would WARMS My I 3301"

The spelling of "Fludd" is "wrong" but it gives us a clue. That "wrong" spelling references a man named Robert Fludd. He is the creator of the disk that is seen in the Sandy Yagi Skull/Fox/Crows image. See: Fright Knight (1:05 mark or so): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Mm_xFQ4EiWA

Note that "approaches" is spelled "wrong" too. That might be the French spelling or a purposeful mis-spelling for some other reason. Note also the "wrong" spacing at "Stars.A" Is that a clue? Look also at the word "chord" in relation to the other words. Chord of Would sounds like Cord of Wood. What is special about a cord of wood? Why "mis-spell" those words? Chord is related to music which seems to be a major theme this year.

Note the "odd" capitalization. Capitalized letters are: A F C A C W A R M S M I

IMAGES: SEARCHING FOR CLUES -- SOURCE CODE, ETC.

With the original image, you can right-click (on a PC) and get the source information. 2017C3301 often buries clues in the source code such as a web address or some other string of letters/numbers.

Cicada also puts clues in the file names and website names. For example, the 2017 StartImage was named "7.png" (the number seven being a main theme of 2017C3301).

IMAGES: SNEAKY TRICKS

Letters written in the same color as the background (white letters on white, black on black, etc.). Find these by "selecting all" and then clicking on the color icon converting white to black, etc. (You probably need to do this with the original 2017C3301 image.) There might not be any text to convert, so .... you might get nothing.

But trial and error are your two best friends.

AUDIO: SPECTRUM ANALYSIS

Cicada used a lot of audio files, music and sounds to provide clues.

.wav or .mp3 (or other audio files) can be put through scanning programs. Various analysis can be made like spectrum analysis ("spectrogram") and waveform. Various parts of the audio can be separated. C3301 often layers of sound/voice over music.

The spectrogram creates an image which might also be a clue OR have a written message embedded in the screen output.

If this is still available, listen. Music, voices, backwards voices, shattering glass can be heard and in the background, you can hear the sound of cicadas.

In the posted pic, you can see images at the bottom. By searching the images (example: google image search).

By running the images though an image search program, you can locate clues. The human figure is a statue of Giuliano de Medici's by Michelangelo, the middle image is from Robert Fludd's relevant book and the other is the Cicada signal.

MORSE CODE: AUDIO AND VISUAL

C3301 often uses Morse code. As audio, it is a series of repetitive beeps, short and long pauses in between. Research to locate examples.

Morse Code can also be rendered visually as dots and dashes.

In the Sandy Yagi Skull/Fox/Crows image (above; partial) for 2017C3301, using Photoshop, Morse code can be found in the border around the image. Translated, it says: "A new species is emerging evolution is no longer guided by survival it is now guided by will the future is ours to choose and the singularity is approaching myriad choices will be made and utopia will usurp the world as neurons are designed to something new."

AUDIO: DEEPSOUND SOFTWARE

Just a couple of days ago (24 Mar 2017), the Apocalypse Song .mp3 file was changed to add a Deepsound audio clue. Extracting the .wav file resulted in two clues. One was the .PDF file that is posted along with this post. That .pdf has now been decoded.

PROBABLY NOT RELEVANT: Deepsound is also a word fo SO-FAR. “The SOFAR channel (short for Sound Fixing and Ranging channel), or deep sound channel (DSC), is a horizontal layer of water in the ocean at which depth the speed of sound is at its minimum. 76 49 27 33 41 22 might also be SKY COORDINATES. Stars and constellations are big themes for 2017C3301.

If you go to Google Sky, and enter those 6 numbers, Google Sky will show you the constellation closest to your coordinates, in this case Ursa MINOR. (Ursa Major is in several clues given by 2017C3301 so far.) As far as I can tell, Google Sky only uses the first four numbers and gives a result of Ursa Minor, the coordinates of which, are: 11h 59m 0s 77* 37 27.3 Using only the first four numbers, Google Sky will also give you the Little Dipper constellation at 81* 55' 38.2”

Scenario: So, you – a hypothetical you – are happily trying to solve the puzzle, you are researching, you are cruising along and you see a link; you click; but “page not found” or something like that. You keep trying and still nothing. All comes to a screeching halt. Disappointment, etc., off to other things or, worse yet, off to watch others solve the puzzle.

Solution: The right tool(s). Cicada 3301 is not for beginners. Among its many methods of hiding clues, Cicada 3301 uses .ONION websites. These are websites that cannot be reached with normal web browsing software. You need something called a TOR browser.

You have to take an abstract viewpoint to what you seek as well. Yes, there is a code to cracked but there is more than one right answer, if there even is one.
Look around you right now. Seriously, take a step back and just reflect on the script all of us are living right now. It's not mundane or stable anymore yet we still all to seem to go about as if nothing has changed.
2016 was a strange year, and more folk are expanding what they originally believed in as truths to their experience. The story is getting old so therefore it has to get more edgy. Real Life is dropping in the ratings and soon their might be another cheaper singularity. So, it has to keep testing us with more frequent irregularities.

Agreed again. The Cicada folks even encourage that singularity at times. There was a message this year that said something like "The Pilgrimage is taken alone." I dislike that idea. There are always people around to help with a journey. Maybe the idea is simply that you can't expect to be carried on your journey. You actually have to do the work. I am good with that idea.

Good question. From what I can tell, 2012C3301 was a job interview for someone now going by "Z". I do not know what 2013-15 were about. 2016 seems not to have finished and is spilling over into 2017.

What is the "expected" event for 2017? Honestly, I don't know. It is tough to know if the apocalyptic references are intended seriously or are just a gloss to add some interest to the puzzle (a back story, so to speak).

For me (at least for now), I am interested in learning for the aesthetic value. that might wear off soon. Who knows.

Sorry. Missed your comment. The first puzzle was 2012 (if I understand correctly). This year's puzzle started 05 Jan 2017. They tend to go the whole year. "Big reveal" clues are Jan and June with lots of smaller clues each week/month. No one is quite sure what the puzzle are "for."

The main website has changed several times. What is of interest (to me anyway) is that the audio file that is playing as of today is called TheFluddApproaches.wav.

The clues echo through the puzzle and note the spelling. Still "FLUDD" (so referencing Robert Fludd), but "approaches" is now the correct English spelling. FWIW

In that dropbox is a Windows RAR .zip file. If you download it, It will auto open as an "evaluation" copy of the program and you will need to subsequently delete it from your computer (or pay for it, I guess, or have it not be usable ... whatever)

It contains three files, one of which is called AMessageOfHope.wav.

Sometimes you can open a .wav file (always?) as a text file. In my case, I opened Notepad and then "opened" AMessageofHope.wav. I then obtained a bunch of characters. I can see what is a star chart. I then "selected all" (from the dropdown "edit" tab at the top) and set the font to "2" which made the whole thing easier to see.

This is one method that Cicada hides clues.

Star chart looks vaguely like the Earth, and then there is a list of numbers starting with 1.6 so I can only assume its the golden ratio. Probably some way to solve the ridiculous cipher that is the other two files. To my view, as a star chart, those lines intersect between Virgo and Leo (Lion... there are a lot of lion clues). One line says "equator." the other says "ecliptic." From my eye, the intersecting point is very close to the point where the sun will be on 23 Sept 2017 when Jupiter exits the virgo constellation (but I could be wrong).

As for how star charts can pinpoint a place on earth, I don't know how to do that. Because the earth is turning, one star coordinate makes a path, not a point. To navigate via the stars, you triangulate (if I understand correctly).

It looks like as the world rotates the two star points will hit the intersection. Could be the 7/1, and 9/23, and explaining where this entity exists on Earth during those times?

Back to the beginning and taking more lessons from Fright Knight.

The start of the 2017C3301 was an image. That image was a file named 7.png. Aside from the text, several clues were hidden variously in the image and its code.

According to Fright Knight, the 7.png was “downloaded to a text file” (see images of his screen in the youtube video @ the 1:19 forward) and, at the end of the text file, there was a “string of clear text.” That string of clear text gave coordinates at 35.285827, -115.68463 and
an onion link at “popfilesxuru7lsr.onion/ ~truth7/7111317192329.png. See 1:24-:26 in the video. [Thanks again to Fright Knight for the clear instructions and guidance.]

The coordinates reference a now-long-gone location in the Mojave desert where there was once a lonely payphone (the “Mojave Desert Payphone”). The onion link led to the Sandy Yagi artwork (doctored by Cicada) called “Fox and Crows.” A partial of that image is used as the image for this /x thread.

Basic tips, I put them in an order of difficulty:

ENCRYPTION: CODING/DECODING NUMBERS: A LITTLE BIT OF KNOWLEDGE

I do not fully understand it, but if I had to guess, this involves encryption of binary code via RSA. if you go to the third tab ("RSA Encryption"), you see that the converter program needs 3 (or 4) things:

two prime numbers
some plain text.

Go and experiment. I had the program "pick two random primes." It gave me two big, six digit primes. (I would have chosen 7 and 11, LOL). I then typed plain text: "A Fludd approches" (no punctuation). I hit "encrypt" and lots of OMG WOW stuff appeared. Do this yourself and see the output.

For me, column headings are: Character, Decimal, Bit Groups, Decimal. The second line is:

I took this message and put it through the octal converter you listed and got a list of numbers. I fed that into the first tab to find prime numbers and got 61. Then I put that in the encryption as the only primes to get the "key". Then I put the information given into the encryption to get the weird meaning. From there I put it in notepad and fucked with the font sizes and box size to "line" the characters up, looks like a little 4chan logo. It was pretty easy honestly.

As described above, downloading the 7.png image into a text file gave us two clues. One was to a now-long gone phone booth in the Mojave desert. The phone number, however, is still extant and, Cicada has access to it.

Watch the video. You'll see that Ed (from Outer Dark) gets an email from Cicada. The person is "Z" and his name is in binary code. (see 0:50 mark).

Then Outer Dark explains that various .wav files were located with hidden messages.

Then there was an encryption in Base64. Ed then converts it into binary code and then into text. DOUBLE.

Watch Ed (from the Outer Dark) closely and what he is doing on his computer. He shows how he searches the source code to find http addresses on other information.

Watching this Outer Dark video foreshadows future lessons I am planning to do here. The clock faces are a cipher and have to be decoded. The second "stopping place" in the puzzle also has/had clock hands (which may or may not have been hands for a clock). The current "stopping place" in the game has cipher wheels and "hands," so something similar to the clock faces.

For me, it is useful to think of it as a disk with two “wheels” or “rings” (like Saturn) one which moves. The outer ring is the normal Enlish alphabet; the inner (moving) ring has different letters. You line them up to encrypt and decrypt. Our code is: lnpr tuzx ywvs omqi hfdb aceg jk I broke it up into 4-letter segments; helps me work with it; cuts down errors. (With computer typefaces and fonts, the “i” and the “l” and the “1” get confused. So watch for that.)

Wolves= the big bad, too are foxes, trapped in their head.

Thanks. I admit I am stuck on just the first part. The Alberti one-to-one cipher is fine. Pretty straightforward. But then the PDF says: "Digest is: “KSNFJJYHWJQMII”

What is this "digest?" Where did that string of letters come from? Same number of letters and three "Js", so very likely still related to "A Simple Message" (with 3 Ss). And this "digest" follows discussion of the Enigma Machine suggesting that the "digest" follows using the Enigma machine.

But I am lost. It is unclear to me if I am using the Alberti cipher result or the original "A Simple Message." I think the first, but ....

Then Cicada Z said this: we put "our key e 'ZZQZQAC' through Alberti ... " Wha?

Where did THAT string of letters come from?

And what is this "e key ..." I don't see a place to input an "e key" (or any "key") for either Alberti or for the Enigma. I thought (and researched) the idea that Alberti-Enigma is something itself (as opposed to two things done sequentially). But I didn't find that.

I get the hints re: setting the rotors and the plugboard. But "key e"?

Anyway, a couple of more resource links. Doing the Alberti via hand is actually easier, but here is a decoder for simple Alberti. I did not find it easy to use, but I did eventually get it to encrypt the original message.

Here is another decoder and you can see fields for inputting shift, increment and length. But I get gibberish and certainly not any of the strings of letters written by Cicada Z.

Okay, so I picked the 3-rotor simulator (not the 4), went with I, II and III (of the eight possible rotors to mount), then left the initial rotor positions (Grundstelling) as A, B and C set the initial alphabet (Ringstelling) at Z-Z-Q, per the PDF. I put in Z-D and A-C in the plug board space.

I used "l dyoist otddlzt" in the message-to-type field.

Results: GMZRTRYSSGABFO

I tried "A SIMPLE MESSAGE" and got: MYQCQGGWDPNHKW

Okay, neither of those are on Cicada Z's LittleHelp PDF.

So there is this field called "Reflector." At first it was set at B. I'll change it to C.

So, none of those show up on the LittleHelp PDF.

Here (and the next) are where we are in the puzzle. We have a cipher wheel with three "hands" which are giving us rotor settings for the enigma machine.

What are we doing with this?

2017C3301 has given us a long string of letters (the "KJK" string). Is that the plaintext or the cipher text? If plaintext, then do we need to run it through the Alberti wheel? Is that an Alberti wheel? The wheel has two inner rings. So is that a composite Alberti (essentially two Alberti wheels)? The given wheel had runes; those were JRR Tolkein runes which converted to english letters.

There seems to be a consensus on the rotor settings, but I have not seen any thoughts on the F; Q1.Q2. "Vigenere" is a whole different method of ciphering (research it). Is "Mod" short for modification? There is two Vigenere substitutions. Rivest, Shamir & Adleman is yet another type of encryption (RSA) (research that). Note that RSA needs an "e ........" key (see above discussion of ALittleHelp PDF).
