Most of our day to day experiences cannot be procesed on the spot, because we are not aware of them or we have something else on our minds, all that extra information ends in dream space for further exploration.
Hidden desires, guilt, etc..
We just love to visit dream worlds, where we can experience things that we can not do in normal life. Are dreams real? That is you to decide. I see that they are as real as this life here, sometimes even more real.

I don't think anything really serves a true 'higher purpose' at the end of the day, but I think that it's a completely natural (in that we don't have to ingest anything or radically change or bodily processes for it to occur) way for you body to tell you that your perceptions do not always show reality as it truly is.
