Hard to know.
>>
It's from a cut section of the original novel. The cut section details several instances of terrible deaths that occur in the hotel over many years before the Torrances show up.

In one of them, set in the fifties or sixties, there's a corporate Halloween costume party. There's a closet homosexual there who dresses as a dog. He gets too drunk, and makes fool out of himself. Then he returns to his room and fantasizes about his boss. Ends up OD'ing and drowning in the bathtub.

So yeah, it's a real part that Stephen King wrote, but Kubrick made it very effective just with this weird allusion, and making the audience wonder.
>>
>>18806440
Thanks, so it's not true that it's some kind of cult reference as some claim?

Nah. In fact you can read the cut sections online somewhere, that's how I know. It's fairly mundane and boring though, you can see why he cut it.

Kubrick only used that which would serve his own narrative from the materials he took his stories from. King himself was outraged that he changed and left out so much, particularly about Jack's alcoholism since that was what the book was about and it was quite a personal topic for him. Anyway, the book sucked and King's miniseries really fucking sucked.
>>

A down on his luck alcoholic writer. How original.
Jack confirmed for literal self insert OC.
>>

King was never subtle about Jack being based on himself, he's admitted before in interviews that The Shining was mostly about his struggle of being an alcoholic father.

His stories bring out a feeling others don't. Like something is approaching, getting closer to you as the story unfolds. Like your lining up with something you wouldn't otherwise see. A world where all of these things are actual. Made real by belief.
>>
there's a film on Netflix called Room 237 exploring a lot of the weird theories and aspects of Kubrick's adaptation.

apparently the architecture / geometry of the movie set doesn't make sense, and the hotel couldn't have been a real place. Like there are windows where an exterior wall couldn't exist, or a character will take 4 right turns and not be facing the direction they started, etc.

but yeah, some of the unexplained stuff the mom sees in the end of the movie when the ghosts all start going apeshit, that's not Kubrick, that was King's book, and there just wasn't time in the movie to fill out all the backstory so it's left as a surreal mystery.

Still my favorite movie version of King. The theme at the beginning. The mist on the maze. If you invert the colors of the opening title, the colors match the rug in the hotel. Kubric was awesome.

This; Kubrick is very good at implicit world-building. He understands that in film, visuals don't always need concrete answers, just something to make you wonder.
>>
>>18809067
Some of those examples of improbable geometry are making some assumptions that some scenes and cuts are all in real time when they may not have been.

But really, it was just meant to be confusing and disorienting to build a feeling of uneasiness.

This is my favorite scene from the entire movie.
In the movie, Jack Torrence drives a Red VW. In Kubrick's movie, he places a VW crushed under an tanker truck. It's kind of symbolic of how this is HIS movie, not him making a movie for King.
>>
>>18809058
I don't know about that. I think King's real strength is that he has a very natural, conversational writing style. It's like he's in the room with you, telling you the story.

Probably the best movie Ive seen considering how few I have watched

Does "The Caretaker" have something to do with Jack? The music sounds familiar even though I've never heard it before and Jack was the Caretaker all along wasn't he?

Maybe. Its true that there are many badly filmed King stories. But the Shining isn't seen as much more than what it is. Other than by Kubric fanatics.

It's no wonder Kubrick cut this shit and the movie is a million times the product the novel is. King is such a shit fucking writer.

My interpretation is the hotel and mannerisms of the hotel bend the will of man and nature to its base pleasures, kind of like Jack and when he went crazy. Thats just me though.

True story.

He grew to hate King in one fateful moment right before filming was wrapped.

He'd never actually -read- all of the Shining. When he finally got to the end he became enraged and called King in the middle of the night in a fury. Something at the end of the book about Jack's redeemed spirit watching over Danny just triggered the shit out of him.

Never spoke to King again.

I was thinking mostly about The Stand. I've read a few more of his novels but I prefer his short stories since he doesn't get a chance to fuck them up too badly. Haven't read anything of his in many years though.

That's beautiful. Thanks, I hadn't heard of that musician. Will look for more of his work.

This is an interesting little compilation of the old 1930s ballroom songs used by Kubrick in the film. I actually have an old 1940s set of 78 records of Ray Noble and his orchestra. I love the pop music of that era. So romantic and dreamy, it's like music from another world compared to the pop of today. It seems to me that a very different species of human being made that music than the people who walk the earth today.
