A medieval chemical philosophy of art, Alchemy has its asserted aims at the transmutation or transformation of base metals into gold, the preparation of the elixir of longevity, and the discovery of panacea (a solution for all difficulties or diseases). In short, Alchemy is the miraculous power of transmutation or extraction.

I have been wondering about this. We know that Newton devoted a large potion of his time to alchemy but no one ever talks about it in detail. What exactly did his research entail? What experiments did he attempt and what did he learn?

for that matter, what do any alchemists actually *do*?

I dont know much about alchemy but it's something about how they can transmute their inner-self to spiritual gold. They also believe that all material got a soul and through attempts of physical transmutation they discover secrets of the universe and them selves... or something along those lines.
So azoth man.
What a weird thing to think about.

>spiritual gold
bit of a bait and switch, no?
This is for you Christian occultists, I suppose. Even if you aren't Christian, this is still a good look into 17th-century German occult and alchemical material. If there is adequate interest I'll post some of the more interesting pictures contained within
The most important point to make is that alchemy is both spiritual and physical.
