AI's biggest issue right now is image recognition. They need to be trained to recognise objects, so hooking that up to the captcha system is incredibly smart.
Since google's pushing their self-driving car hard it makes sense that they want to AI to be absolutely flawless at recognising streetsigns. They know that wary governments will look for any weakness to block self-driving cars from entering the market so any crash is bad for business. So far they've had to have a driver behind the wheel at all times and they've had to take control numerous times due to poor judgement by the AI, although it's getting better.
Self-driving vehicles will be a huge bonus to society, and the only issue will be finding drivers new jobs
