I found out about Tor and .onion links from /x/ in ~2011 and shared it in 2013, namely Silk Road and whatever the Wikipedia-looking page was that was just sort of an index, with a friend that lived down the street. He tells another friend about it who either already knew about bitcoin and had some or had the means to acquire itand convinced him to start using Silk Road to hook some friends up.

Long story short, in June that year some friends of mine got together and did tabs of 25i that were indirectly from the guy that used SR. My friend Sam, who had easily done the most drugs in his life of anyone that was there, started panicking, saying that he knew he was going to die, and that he'd gone and talked to his parents, and just generally scary stuff. Well the guy whose house it was had taken all of their phones as the host for the trip. When Sam started panicking, this kid Matt, who was 17 at the time, according to his testimony, tried to calm Sam down with a full-Nelson. Sam ended up dying that night and the official cause was asphyxiation. Matt moved our friends body twice that night, leaving him in a field next to his car, covered in a blanket.

Anyway, I live with one of the guys that was there tripping with them who left before it all went to hell. His dad is apparently high ranking in the govt and has claimed while drunk to have made the final push to make the entire deep web a honeypot.
