there are many cases of the apostles using a kind of liberal language when speaking to jews in their efforts to convert them. read the book of hebrews, and all the prophecy fulfillment from psalms etc in matthew. it was an appeal to their tradition. they would understand this concept of "hanging on a tree" because its referenced within their torah. it also fits with how they judged jesus at the time.

Referring to the Cross as a tree (I've even heard of it as a beam before) is as old as Christianity itself. Even modern worship songs use this verbage:

Hanging, believe it or not, is a relatively recent punishment. Wasn't commonly used until the Middle Ages in England.

You don't suffocate just because your arms are above your head for awhile. If that were so then hundreds of people would die yearly from being voluntarily crucified. Roman crucifixion is a form of exposure death: kind of like being staked to the ground in the hot sun, but on a wooden frame instead.
