3 in the habitable zone. Current technology theoretically capable of achieving speeds .1c so 400 years away as of right now. That's pretty amazing, /x/philes.

This totally blows all the announcements the trump administration has made out of the water. NASA never overhypes and always delivers.

actually it wouldn't be us, it would be a fine selection of our species that will demonstrate a nice utopĂa like "universe 25". if any one of them survive then why will land on the planet and repopulate with a new stone age because the tech of the space ship will be too old to work properly

I wish so bad I could see the day we can travel the stars. Sadly I believe it could be a few more hundred years before we see extra-solar exploration.
>>
>>18666709
It really isn't, they already had plans in the 60s to aim ground based lasers to power a tiny probe ship with sails to pick up the photon radiation from the Earth signal. The velocities talked about where up to 0.27c or about 16 years to get something to the Alpha Centauri system and another 4 years to get a reply from it, which means there could've been orbiting probes around another star in the 1980s.

Humanity needs to be guided by an invisible hand, the process that is occurring on our planet is probably following a standard operating procedure, similar to the one outlined in >Hard to Be a God by Arkady and Boris Strugatsky (1964).

Namely alien humanoids are embedded into and near positions of power and influence throughout human history and civilization, to help guide it away from total collapse and destruction and towards meeting the pre-requisites for joining the Interstellar Collective. Meaning there are maybe only a handful of alien operatives on the planet at any given time, they have advanced technology cloaked to appear as mundane objects and are in contact with each other. Their mission would be a long, slow and gradual process taking many generations to complete. They would prioritize careful study and observation, and occasionally step in to prevent man-made disaster escalating to extinction levels or perhaps for their own selfish reasons, breaking their strict non-intervention policy.

This is what we would do if we discovered an alien species far less advanced than us technologically, and it is very likely what is being done to us right now.

Contact would not work until we reached some technological and social equilibrium, otherwise the gross imbalances between species would lead to war.

If you devote the next 50 years of your life to either becoming a pilot or obtaining a physics degree and doing research, you will eventually get to work with the people who will be part of the first off-world team. Probably using robot bodies.
>>
>>18661318
40 light years is literally nothing in the cosmic scale. Could have 98 million light years instead.

Even at just 0.3c it would take less than 150 years to get there

>>
>>18661372
the fact that somehow as years go by they find habitable planets closer and closer to earth. an idiot on the other thread on this board earlier had the audacity to tell me that the technology simply wasn't there yet to discover nearby by planets but it was there somehow to discover planets/dwarfs/stars bazillions of lightyears away.. and i'm sick and tired of these "artist renditions" of all this bullshit they put up every so often, show us the real deal for fucks sake.

putting aside the sun activity is going bonkers lately and is causing all sorts of things on this planet including ofc "global warming".. my take on this is that the corporate satanists are willing to fuck up this planet to the point of no return and take w/e is left of us and continue the self-destructive socioeconomic paradigm on another planet. just look at all the hollywood space colony/immigration'esque movies lately and the general mars hype.

these fucks will be holding us in the dark as much as they can and will keep feeding us stuff we're only "allowed" to know while the curious will be always shut down as they did with the MUH ALIENS question on the reddit ama earlier.

what a fucking joke
>>
>>18667478

Proxima Centauri b is an exoplanet orbiting the closest star to Sol (Proxima Centauri 4.22 ly away). It's even within the habitable zone, and it was discovered August of last year. There are planets around all the stars. The confusion comes around how they are discovered, they cannot be directly imaged, the star is observed carefully. The light emitted dips periodically whenever an orbiting object just as a planet passes between us and the star, from this we infer the size and later the composition of the planet.

They are naturally finding all of the stars with periods of days or months first, because to find an exact Earth analogue would take a few years (as it would need to pass in front of it's home star several times for us to 'detect' it).

NASA just wants money, this is only exciting for people in the field, the average person shouldn't care (because of how common planets are).
>>
>>18667429
will you be alive in 150 years? me either. if intergalactic colonization or warfare doesn't happen in my lifetime I don't care.

If they have radio we'd be able to listen to their signals from 40 years ago. We can communicate with an 80 year delay, basically.

What wasn't mentioned by NASA is the fact that 2 of the planets atmospheres have a high Oxygen content that only happens when there's life creating Oxygen.

Both of these planets have plant life life and possibly more.

Check the data for Oxygen count.
