Greetings, and welcome to The /x/ Files, the weekly news digest for 4chan's Paranormal board. Every Sunday, we take a quick snapshot of the mysterious world around us and bring it, in an easily readable magazine format, to the board. I am The Editor, the anonymous creator of this idea and collector of the news that will be following below. In the interests of legitimacy, I will be using a secure tripcode to post the thread; once the posts are completed, I will take the tripcode off and return to my anonymity.

Scientists Revive 10,000-year-old Life

In a remarkable breakthrough, microbes trapped inside cave crystals have been brought back to life. The organisms were found encased inside shafts of gypsum within Mexico's Naica mountain caves - a place that has become synonymous with the study of life surviving in extreme environments. Incredibly, after extracting microbes from within the crystals, scientists were actually able to revive them despite the fact that they had been trapped there for between 10,000 and 50,000 years.

"Other people have made longer-term claims for the antiquity of organisms that were still alive, but in this case these organisms are all very extraordinary - they are not very closely related to anything in the known genetic databases," said Dr Penelope Boston.

The Naica mountain caves are among the most hostile environments on Earth. Anything attempting to survive there has to deal with permanent darkness, stifling temperatures and high levels of acidity. The fact that microbes recovered from the caves can be revived even after tens of thousands of years demonstrates just how incredibly resilient life can be.

Woolly Mammoth 'On the Verge of Resurrection'

Speaking in advance of this year's American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) meeting, Professor George Church, the scientist leading efforts to achieve the 'de-extinction' of the woolly mammoth, has claimed that success may be only a couple of years away. His team at Harvard University has been working to create a "mammophant" - a cross between a modern elephant and a mammoth that will possess some of the physical traits of both species. To achieve this, the researchers are going to splice in the genes associated with certain mammoth traits such as long shaggy hair, subcutaneous fat and blood adapted to cold weather climates.

"We're working on ways to evaluate the impact of all these edits and basically trying to establish embryogenesis in the lab," said Professor Church.

There are even plans to grow the hybrid inside an artificial womb rather than in a surrogate mother, mainly to avoid harming any elephants which are themselves becoming increasingly endangered. Not everyone however is enthusiastic about what the team is attempting to achieve.

"The proposed 'de-extinction' of mammoths raises a massive ethical issue - the mammoth was not simply a set of genes, it was a social animal, as is the modern Asian elephant," said Matthew Cobb, professor of zoology at the University of Manchester. "What will happen when the elephant-mammoth hybrid is born? How will it be greeted by elephants?"

Bolivia Under Siege by Plague of Locusts

The South American country has declared a state of emergency following a mass influx of the insects. First reported back in January, the vast swarm has already managed to cover over 1,000 hectares of crops in the province of Santa Cruz and is threatening to spread even further. Plagues of locusts are generally unheard of in Bolivia, despite the fact that its neighbor Argentina has had to deal with swarms of the insects since the 1920s. A new government unit has now been set up in an effort to address the problem with plans to fumigate over 17,000 hectares of crops to stop the insects endangering the food supply.

"We will create a 500-metre-wide ring around the area affected and fumigate inside, working alongside the local authorities," said Agriculture Secretary Mauricio Ordonez.

The Final Scan of King Tut's Tomb

In a story we've been following since the very fist issue of The /x/ Files, The search for a secret chamber in the tomb of King Tutankhamun will resume later this year when a team of Italian researchers begin the most in-depth investigation ever of the boy king's burial site.

"It will be a rigorous scientific work and will last several days, if not weeks," Franco Porcelli, the project's director said. "Three radar systems will be used and frequencies from 200 Mhz to 2 GHz will be covered."

Porcelli's probe into the 3,300-year-old burial will be the third carried out in the past two years. The search began in 2015 following a claim by Nicholas Reeves, an Egyptologist at the University of Arizona. Reeves believes there is a hidden chamber in King Tut's tomb that contain the remains, and possibly the intact grave goods, of Queen Nefertiti, Tutankhamun's mother. Reeves speculated that the tomb of King Tut was not ready when the pharaoh died unexpectedly at age 19 in 1323 B.C. Consequently, he was buried in a rush in what was originally the tomb of Nefertiti, who had died 10 years earlier.

Radar scans carried out in 2015 by Japanese radar specialist Hirokatsu Watanabu were greeted with enthusiasm by Mamoud El-damaty, Egypt's former minister of antiquity. He revealed that analysis of Watanabu' scans pointed to a "90 percent chance" that King Tut's tomb concealed two chambers, on the north and eastern walls. "This could be the discovery of the century," El-damaty said.

But a follow-up radar scan carried out by the National Geographic Society cooled down expectations as it failed to replicate Watanabu's compelling results. The theory that King Tut's tomb contains secret chambers was greeted with great skepticism last year at an international conference in Cairo dedicated to the boy king.

Expanded Perspectives: Phone Calls From the Dead

On this episode of Expanded Perspectives the guys start the show off talking about how researchers have discovered a 5,000-year-old beer recipe by studying the residue on the inner walls of pottery vessels found in an excavated site in northeast China. It’s the earliest evidence of beer production in China so far. Then, the researchers at DeepMind have been working with two games to test whether neural networks are more likely to understand motivations to compete or cooperate. They hope that this research could lead to AI being better at working with other AI in situations that contain imperfect information.

Then, a man in Maryland claims he and two other people saw an unknown big bird he believes to be Thunderbird. The 55-year-old press operator, who asked to be kept anonymous, told Cryptozoology News that he was in the kitchen when his twin brother noticed the oddity. Then, frightening first-hand accounts of the Black Eyed Children have been flooding the internet for the last few years, terrifying readers with tales of strange kids showing up on doorsteps in the middle of the night, causing strange illnesses, and even resulting in the death of anyone foolish enough to let them in their homes. Now a relatively new type of encounter has started to crop up: Black Eyed Adults.

After the break Kyle brings up some bizarre phantom phone calls. Can the telephone be used as an instrument to allow the dead to communicate with the living? Whether it’s to say one last goodbye or even to warn of impending danger, phantom phone calls are a real and documented paranormal phenomenon. Here are four such cases of people who were mysteriously contacted from the “beyond”.

Astonishing Legends: The Nazi Bell, Part One

In August of 1997, Polish journalist, military historian, researcher and author, Igor Witkowski claims to have been shown classified prisoner interrogation transcripts of German SS General Jakob Sporrenberg by a Polish Intelligence agent. What Witkowski discovered seemed to be official evacuation protocols for a secret Nazi research project concerning a device named “Die Glocke” which he referred to as, “The Nazi Bell.” Given the highest top secret classification by the German WWII military of “Krieg Entscheidend” or “War Decisive” the Nazi Bell appears to have been a machine designed to produce nuclear energy or weaponry or become an engine for anti-gravity Field Propulsion, but with some startling, uncontrollable and lethal side-effects such as the disruption of the space-time continuum. Witkowski’s findings led him to write a seminal book on the subject, Prawda o Wunderwaffe or “The Truth About the Wonder Weapon” published in 2000. This, in turn, has led authors like Nick Cook and Dr. Joseph P. Farrell to expand on the subject in their own respective books. Tonight we speak with Igor Witkowski to discuss how he came about his research on The Nazi Bell, what he thinks it might have been capable of, and finally a hint as to what it might still become.
