Look at Dugway Proving Ground in Utah. That place has some crazy shit. On of my F-16s diverted there from Hill AFB years ago and we had to go fix it. Took a wrong turn on the base and next thing we know we had a bunch of guys in black suits point sub machine guns at us. Crazy shit.

Not much anymore. They keep the speciousness for the publicity, nothing says fresh Air Force recruits like an opportunity to get a peak at Area 51.
To be honest all the happenings in the 60s and 70s with Area 51 weren't even at Area 51 just what was supposedly recovered from aliens was taken there. I would take the belief that there WAS classified military tech being tested there. Nevada is a dumping ground for nukes a long time ago also, there's a lot of waste stored all over the state in various black out sites, that give sign warnings but no real guards. You wouldn't want to step foot in those places however as like I said they are weapon testing grounds and still may have active explosives under the dirt.

What I would be more weird about is not shit that happened revolving around Area 51 as it just is the typical classified base and those are everywhere. What I would consider weird was shit like MKUltra where they went around drugging people with LSD and looking for psychic fucks that could read minds or manipulate matter. The former of which is still ongoing, albeit turned into a scientific debacle.

From all the legitimate information I've been able to gather, Area 51 is mostly used for experimental weapons testing. However, there have also been some possibly extraterrestrial items studied there and some reverse engineering of prototypes from foreign nations. Most of the reason for the absurdly high security there however is because of the experimental weapons and aircraft testing. The US military is absurdly paranoid about nebulous "enemies" getting even a hint of something that might be coming down the pipe ten or twenty years down the line, a holdover from the cold-war era arms race and anti-espionage policies. The only stuff that I've found some good evidence of likely being of extraterrestrial origin have been rather small items relating to molecular science and electromagnetic containment, but even the scientists working on it weren't entirely sure what it was they were trying to study and reverse engineer.
TL;DR For the most part, it's relatively innocuous stuff going on there. They just keep it top secret so that potential enemies can have no hint whatsoever of it in case they need to pull out all the stops and have secret weapons at the ready.

I've been to Pendleton and trained there. Regardless of how big it is, they don't have anything or anyone important enough that they would kill someone for just being there. There are escalating levels of force that are in place, and the only reason they would use lethal force is if you do not obey.
