I wish to have a thread similar to the fascinating Unsolved Crime threads, only concerning more paranormal events. Please keep it in the same format: a brief greentext of the event accompanied with a source for extended reading/viewing. Wikipedia is all right as a source. Solved mysteries/hoaxes that still invoke a creepy feeling are acceptable (pic related), but please post them sparingly and make sure to state their explanation explicitly.
Please refrain from posting personal experience that cannot be verified, as there are several threads already for this purpose. Also refrain from posting dubious youtube videos as are commonly seen in other threads. Well made documentaries are acceptable as sources.
Some thread music.

Disappearance of Felix Moncla
>Moncla was a US air force pilot who had served in the Army during WWII
>Received flight training in Texas and Florida before being stationed in Michigan
>On November 23rd, 1953 intercept radar operators picked up an unusual object near the Soo Locks over Lake Superior
>Moncla was scrambled to investigate
>The two blips on the radar, Moncla and the unidentified object, appeared to merge into one as they got close
>The blips never separated, and continued on its original course
>Radio contact to Moncla was unsuccessful
>As were search and rescue operations
>US government says the object was a misidentified Canadian Airforce plane
>Canadian government has denied several times that any plane was involved in any incident that day

Kelly-Hopkinsville Encounter
>Between Kelly and Hopkinsville, Christian County, Kentucky, 1955
>On August 21, 1955 five adults and seven children appeared at the Hopkinsville police station claiming that extraterrestrials from space were attacking their farm house and they had been defending themselves for almost four hours
>Adults Elmer Stutton and Billy Ray Taylor claimed they had been shooting 12 to 15 short, dark, goblin figures who repeated tried to gain access through the doorway and windows
>Police troopers arrived at the Sutton farmhouse and found nothing but evidence of gunfire in the window and door screens.
>The next day, neighbors told the two officers the two families living on the property, the Stuttons and Taylors had left after claiming the creatures returned at around 3:30 am.
>Creatures were said to float, leaving luminous patches when shot, and left a green light in the woods beyond
>Only attempt at explanation was "misidentified owls"

Seven Gates of Hell

>Area in Pennsylvania that is said to encase 7 'gates' to Hell within a wooded area
>Gates aren't visible but more of a metaphor as you traverse the landscape and descend deeper into a dense forest
>Lots of people from /x/ and other places that attract paranormal enthusiasts have ventured there but no (seeming reputable) source claim to have gone further than 'gate' number two
>At the first gate you supposedly feel great unease, more severe than any other time in your life - as if you're being watched, or stalked by some unknown entity(s)
>At the second gate you supposedly being to hear the voices of those close to you, most often saying things that you subconsciously feel are true. I.e. parents calling you a failure, spouses or partners telling you they don't love you anymore, etc
>All other gates aren't so well reported and as a result I haven't included them

UFO sightings of Gordon Cooper
>Cooper was an areospace engineers, test pilot, US Air Force pilot, and one of the original seven astronauts in Project Mercury, the first manned space program of the United States
>On May 3rd, 1957, while he was assigned to the Experimental Flight Test Division at Edwards Air Force Base in California, he was working on a precision landing system that would take one-frame-per-second photos as an aircraft landed.
>Later that morning, Cooper returned to base to report his crew say a saucer-like aircraft that made no sound either taking off or landing.
>Cooper recalled that these men who see experimental aircraft on a regular basis were extremely unnerved
>The saucer hovered over them, landed 50 yards away using three landing gears, and took off as they approached
>Cooper and his crew captured still images and motion picture film of the UFO
>Recalled there was a special Pentagon number to call in situations such as this
>Contacted and instructed by a general to have the film developed, with no prints made, and sent to the Pentagon in a locked courier patch
>Instructed not to look at the negatives
>Though Cooper expected a follow up investigation would take place, none ever did and the incident was not brought up again
>Never was able to track down the photos or film
>Cooper held the claim until his death that the US government was covering up information concerning UFOs

This is a classic, and probably the most well known case, but is always a good read.
Betty and Barney Hill Abduction
>The Hills lived in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, USA. Barney was an employee of the US Postal Service while Betty was a social worker.
>On September 19th, 1961, the Hills were driving back to Portsmouth after a vacation in Canada.
>At around 10:30 pm, just south of the town of Lancaster, Betty observed a bright light in the sky that moved between the Moon and Jupiter, ipward to the west of the moon.
>While Barney drove down Route 3, Betty thought she saw a falling star moving upward
>It moved erratically and grew in size
>Betty urged Barney to stop the car for a closer look at the phenomenon, as well as to walk their dog that was with them.
>Barney stopped at a picnic area south of Twin Mountain
>Through binoculars, Betty observed an odd-shaped craft flashing multi-colored lights travel across the moon.
>Barney thought it was a commercial airliner at first, but changed his mind as it rapidly descended in his direction
>They quickly got back in their car and drove towards Franconia Notch, a narrow stretch of mountain road.
>The object rapidly descended towards their vehicle, causing Barney to stop the car in the middle of the highway
>The silent craft hovered around 100 ft. above the Hills' car and filled the entire field of the windshield
>Carrying his pistol, Barney stepped out of the car
>With the binoculars Barney claimed to have seen 8 to 11 humanoid figures peering out the craft's windows, looking at him.
>While the other humanoid figures appeared to walk towards a panel on the wall of their craft, one remained and communicated a message telling Barney to "stay where you are and keep looking"
>"Bat-wing" fins extended from the craft bathed in red light, and a long structure descended from the craft
>Barney ran back to the car in a frantic state, and drove away at high speed as the object shifted above them
1/2 I think
>>
>>18624238
>The Hills heard a rhythmic series of buzzing sounds which seemed to be coming off the trunk of their car
>The car started to vibrate, with a tingling sensation beginning to pass through the Hills' bodies
>At this point, they experience an altered state of consciousness in which their minds were dulled
>A second series of buzzing returned them to full consciousness
>They had traveled nearly 35 miles but only remembered vague sections of the road. They recalled an unplanned turn, a roadblock, and the fiery orb in the road.
>Returning home, they experience odd sensations and impulses they couldn't explain
>Their watches wouldn't work
>Barney noticed the binoculars were damaged without damaging them, and his shoes were scrapped. He also had the strange compulsion to examine his genitals in the bathroom, but found nothing unusual.
>Betty observed her dress was torn at the hem, zipper, and lining and noticed a strange pink powder on her dress
>Shiny circles were noticed on the car's trunk that were not there the previous day, which interfered with the needle of a compass
>The couple reported the encounter to Pease Air Force Base, though withheld some details to avoid being labelled as eccentric
>Initial 22nd September interview and report by Major Paul W. Henderson determined that the couple had probably misidentified Jupiter. This report was submitted to Project Blue Book
>Betty wrote to Donald E Keyhoe, leader of NICAP, on september 26 with details of their encounter
>NICAP member Walter N Webb met with the Hills on October the 21, 1961. After a six hour interview, Webb concluded they were telling the truth, though they had a "mental block" on their memories
>Ten days after the alleged UFO encounte, Betty began having strange and vivid dreams that continued for five straight nights then never returned again
2/???
>>
>In one dream she and Barney were stopped at a roadblock by men who surrounded their car. She lost consciousness but fought to regain it.
>She then realized two of the men were forcing her to walk through a forest at nighttime
>Barney was waking behind her, as if in a trance
>The men were around five feet tall and were matching blue uniforms with military type caps.
>They were humanoid, with black air, dark eyes, prominent noses, bluish lips, and grey skin
>In another dream, Betty, Barney and the men were walked up a ramp into the disc-shaped craft that appeared metallic
>When inside, the two were separated. When she protested, Betty was told by one of the men that it would take much longer if they were examined together.
>She was taken to another room, where a new man entered to conduct her exam. This man spoke in imperfect English and she had difficulty understanding him
>The examiner told Betty the tests were to note the differences between humans and the craft's occupants.
>On November 25th, 1961, the Hills were interviewed again by two more NICAP members.
>The two determined the couple was missing time, as they arrived home in seven hours when their trip would have normally taken four
>The members suggested to the couple to try to elicit hidden memories through hypnosis. Thought Barney was apprehensive, the couple agreed as it would "put to rest the nonsense" of Betty's strange dreams
>The two were hypnotized in several sessions beginning on January 4th 1964 and ending June 6th of that year by Benjamin Simon, to whom Barney's psychiatrist recommended
>Barney was hypnotized first
>Under hypnosis, Barney reported that the binocular strap had broken when he ran from the UFO back to his car
>When driving he felt compelled to pull off the road and into the woofs, where he sighted six men standing in the dirt road
>The car stalled as three of the men approached
>They told him not to fear, and the "leader" of the men told Barney to close his eyes.
3/???
>>
>>18624360
>The beings often stared into his eyes, which had a mesmerizing effect. Under hypnosis Barney said things such as "I felt like the eyes had pushed into my eyes" and "Those eyes. They're there in my brain"
>He recalled that the couple was taken onto the disc-shaped craft where they were separated.
>He was escorted to a room with three of the men and told to lie on a small rectangular exam table
>Barney's exam narrative was less detailed than his wife, as he kept his eyes closed from fear
>A cup-like device was placed over his genitals. Though Barney did not experience orgasm, he thought a sperm sample had been taken
>They scraped his skin, and peered into is mouth.
>A thin tube was inserted into his anus and quickly removed
>Someone felt his spine and appeared to be counting his vertebrae
>Barney heard them speaking in a mumbling language he did not understand, but that they understood English and could communicate with him telepathically (Barney was unfamiliar with the term and said it was "thought transference").
>When they spoke English, he noted their mouths did not move
>He recalled being escorted from the ship and taken to the car, and watched the ship leave
>Under hypnosis, Betty's account was similar to that in her dreams, but had notable differences.
>The sequential order was different, the men had a somewhat different physical appearance, and she had many details that were not in her dreams and sometimes contradicted her dream content
>However, her account was consistent with Barney's narrative in hypnosis regression
>Simon gave a post-hypnotic suggestion to Betty to draw a copy of a "star-map" shown to her by the leader of the men, that had been described as a three-dimensional projection similar to hologram
>Although hesitant at first, Betty did what Simon suggested.
>She was only able to map the stars that stood out in her memory, which were twelve prominent stars connected by lines and three lesser ones that formed a triangle.

>She said that the stars connected by solid lined formed "trade-routes", whereas the dashed lines were less-traveled to stars
>Simon speculated that Barney's recollection was possibly a fantasy inspired by Betty's dreams, though admitted this hypothesis did not explain every aspect of the experience.
Epilouge
>In 1968, Majorie Fish of Oak Harbor, Ohio, learned about the case through a 1966 book by John G. Fuller which included a copy of Betty's star-map sketch
>An amateur astronomer, the elementary school wondered if it could be deciphered to reveal wher the UFO came from
>Assuming one of the stars was the Sun, Fish constructed a three dimensional model of nearby Sun-like stars based of stellar distances published in the 1969 Gilese Star Catalogue
>Studying the map over several years, she determined the only star that could match was the double-star system of Zeta Reticuli.
>The distance needed to match these stars into the distinctive triangle on Betty's map was not generally available until the 1969 catalogue was published.

The Lonnie Zamora Incident
>Friday, April 24th, 1964 on the outskirts of Socorro, New Mexico, USA
>At around 5:45 pm, police sergeant Lonnie Zamora was chasing a speeding car due south of Socorro when he heard a roar and saw a flame in the sky to the southwest some distance away "possibly a 1/2 mile or a mile".
>Thinking a local dynamite shack might have exploded, Zamora ceased to give chase and drove to investigate it
>Though he didn't pay close attention to the flame due to glare from the sun, he described a long, narrow, funnel shaped bluish-orange flame. The weather was clear, with a sunny sky and only a few clouds in the area.
>The roar was described as changing from high to low frequency and lasting around 10 seconds and stopping abruptly.
>Zamora drove up a hill and proceeded west when he noticed a shiny object about 150 to 200 yards away, that he first took to be an overturned white car. Looking more closely, the shiny object was metallic, "whitish but not chrome", and shaped like the letter O.
>Standing close to the car were two people, which gave a start when they noticed him as if by surprise
>The people were wearing white coveralls, but Zamora noticed nothing unusual about them other than that they seemed to be unnaturally short. "Normal in shape - but possibly they were small adults or large kids"
>Zamora approached in his car, radioing his dispatcher to say he would be out of his car "checking the car in the arroyo [creek]".
>He stopped the car, got out, and approached the object
>At this point he heard a very load roar again, accompanied with the bluish orange flame, as the object rose slowly upwards
>Keeping the object in view, he ran behind his car and northward away from the object which was still near the ground
>It was "oval in shape...smooth - no windows or doors" with a red letter or insignia in the middle of the object.
>After running a fair distance, Zamora glanced back to notice the object rose from the creek about 20 to 25 feet high.
1/2
>>
>>18624620
>Situating himself just over the hill, Zamora saw the object moving away from him and moving in a straight line about 15 feet off the ground, clearing the dynamite shack by three feet
>Zamora went back to his car and contacted the Sheriff by radio asking them to "look out of the window to see if you could see an object"
>Within hours, the encounter had reached the news and NICAP members were on the scene, as well as members representing the US Air Force Project Blue Book
>Several independent witnesses reported either an "egg shaped craft" or a a bluish flame at roughly the same time in the same area before word was spread, including two tourists and a family of five from Colorado
>A large number of residents were witnesses to the loud roar during the object's takeoff and presumable landing.
>Three persons were found to have called the police dispatcher immediately following the incident to report a bright flame
>The air force investigators interviewed Zamora and other officers before going to the scene with military police officers
>They cordoned off the site, took measurements and took samples of the sand and several scorched bushes.
>Mary G. Mayes a doctoral student at the time from University of Mexico had been asked to analyze plant material from he site, and heard no more about the incident
>When located and interviewed in 1968, she reported that plants burned by the UFO's flames were "completely dried out", and although there was no evidence of radiation, she found two organic substances that she could not identify.
>She also reported an area of "fused sand", that had been created allegedly where the object landed and departed. The area was roughly triangular, around 25 to 30 inches at the widest and tampering down to 1 inch wide, around a quarter inch thick.
>The Air Force had issued their formal report on June 8, 1964, but failed to not any other witnesses and the disturbances to the soil. Nonetheless, they made no claim as to the object's origin
>>
>>18624675
Holy shit I guess 3/3
>They concluded that the "Air Force was continuing its investigator and the case is still open"
>However, In a secret report prepared for the CIA, Major Hector Quintanilla, Project Blue Book's director, elaborated on the case
>He stated "There is no doubt that Lonnie Zamora saw an object which left quite an impression on him. There is also no question about Zamora's reliability. He is a serious police officer, a pillar of his church, and a man well versed in recognizing airborne vehicles in his area. He is puzzled by what he saw and frankly, so are we. This is the best-documented case on record, and still we have been unable, in spite of thorough investigation, to find the vehicle or other stimulus that scared Zamora to the point of panic."

I'm going to take a break, and hope to condense future stories into one-post narratives.

Dead Dogs at Overtoun Bridge
>A bridge over the Overtoun Burn on the road to an eponymous house near Dumbarton in West Dunbartonshire, Scotland
>Completed in 1895
>Since the 1950s or 1960s, dogs have thrown themselves off the bridge at a rate of about one per year
>Mostly jump from the same side of the bridge in clear weather
>An animal habitat expert was sent to investigate, and concluded that the dogs were attracted to the smells of mink
>Local hunters claim there are no mink in the area

J'ba Fofi
>Known as the Congolese Giant Spider, a cryptozoological creature said to exist in the Congo.
>Sightings have only recently been given publicity through the work of the cryptozoologist William Gibbons, who predominated researched the Mokele-Mbembe. As such, well recorded sightings are scarce.
>1938 in the Congo, Reginald and Marguite Lloyd were were driving a truck through a heavily forested trail when they reported a spider as large as a monkey, resembling a tarantula with a five foot leg span. This story was given to Gibbons in the 1990s by their daughter.
>In 1948, in Leesville Louisiana USA, William Slaydon and his grandchildren were walking north on Highway 171 to church when he motioned them to stop. Hearing a rustling in the bushes ahead, a spider "the size of a washtub" emerged and crossed the rod.
>[there is no citation for these ones] in 2016 near the Gulf of Mexico, UFO researchers reported seeing a spider the size of a bus. Another of similar size was reported to have been seen in the Congo
>Baka natives say these spiders are very rare due to a dwindling habitat

The Mad Gasser of Mattoon
>Botetourt County, Virginia, early 1930s
>Mrs. Huffman of Haymakertown reported that on 10 pm, December 22nd 1933 she started smelling an unusual odor that made her nauseous. It returned again a half an hour later, at which time her husband Cal Huffman contacted the police.
>A third wave occurred around 1 am, where the entire household, comprising eight members of the Huffman family and as guest Ashby Henderson, were affected
>Symptoms included headaches, nausea, facial swelling, and constriction of the mouth and throat
>The next incident occurred in Cloverdale on December 24th, when Clarence Hall, his wife, and their two children returned home from church at around 9 am. They smelled a strong, sickeningly sweet odor that made them feel weak
>The investigating police found that a nail had been pulled from a rear window, near where the odor was most powerful.
>It was presumed the nail hole had been used to inject gas into the house
>Other incidents occurred in the following weeks, several of which were accompanied by reports of individuals fleeing the scene; as many as four people in one gassing in Cloverdale
>The last incident in Virginia, on February 9th, left sections of discolored and sweet smelling snow near the victim's house. Analysis showed the contents were sulfur, arsenic, and mineral oil. Authorities speculated it could be residue from insecticide
>The second wave of gassing occurred in Mattoon, Illinois, beginning in late August 1944
>Though there were almost half a dozen attacks, no clear evidence was found until the night of September 5th, when Carl and Beulah Cordes returned home around 10:00 pm
>They noticed a piece of white cloths was on their porch next to the door. Upon smelling it, Beulah became violently ill and described it as being similar to an electric shock
>Adjacent to the porch on the sidewalk was found a large skeleton key and and almost empty tube of lipstick

1808/1809 Mystery Eruption
>A study of Greenland and Antarctic ice cores in the 1990s found markers that indicated a massive volcanic eruption had occurred in early 1809.
>However, there were no recorded eruptions of significance needed to explain the markers. Further research and pine-tree ring data pointed to the eruption being instead in 1808
>In 2014, a PhD student discovered an account of atmospheric events consistent with such an event recorded by Colombian scientist Francisco Jose de Caldas
>In 1809 De Caldas reported a "transparent cloud that obstructs the sun's brilliance a Bogota".
>Similar observations were made by a physician further south in Peru

Bennington Triangle
>A phrase coined by author Joseph A. Citro in 1992 to denote an area of southwestern Vermont, USA within which a number of people disappeared between 1920 and 1950
>Boundaries are unclear, but the area is centered on Glastenbury Mountain and the towns surrounding it
>One of the most well known victims was Paula Welden, 18, who disappeared on December 1st, 1946. Welden set out to hike the Long Trail on Glastenbury Mountain. She was last seen on the trail by an elderly couple who were around 100 yards behind her.
>According to them, she turned a corner in the trail, and when they passed the same bend she was gone.
>An extensive search by the FBI and a posting of a $5000 reward were unsuccessful
>James E. Tedford disappeared on the same day as Welden, three years later in 1949.
>Returning from visiting relatives in St. Albans, he boarded a local bus where he vanished.
>According to witnesses, Tedford was still on the bus at the last stop before Bennington. Somewhere between this last stop and Bennigton, Tedford disappeared.
>His belongings were still onboard, and an open bus timetable was left in his empty seat
>The fifth and unexplained disappearance was that of Frieda Langer in 1950.
>Accompanying her cousin Herber Elsner on a hike on October 28th, she slipped and fell in a stream
>Telling Elsner to wait, she left for their family campsite to get dry clothes
>When she did not return, Elsner made his way back to discover that she had not made it back, and nobody had seen her
>Over the next two weeks five searches were conducted including helicopters and 300 searchers. They failed to turn up any trace of Langer
>On May 12th, 1951, her body was found near Somerset Reservoir, in an area that had been well covered by previous searches. Due to exposure, no cause of death could be determined
>Langer's body was the only to be found from the five people who disappeared in the Bennington Triangle

Death of Mary Reeser; St. Petersburg, Florida
>On July 2nd, 1951, around 8 am, Reeser's landlady Pansy Carpenter arrived at Reeser's door with a telegram
>She found the metal doorknob uncomfortably hot to hold, and called the police
>They found the remains of Reeser, mostly ash, among the remains of a chair on which she had been sitting.
>Only part of her left foot, a piece of slipper, and her backbone remained
>Plastic objects near the seat of the fire were softened and out of shape
>Her skull was found in the ashes, but was shrunken
>Whereas heat should have bursted the skull, no explanation has been devised for such an unusual shrinking
>On July 7th of that year, St. Petersburg police chief J.R. Reichert sent a box of evidence to FBI director J. Edgar Hoover
>This box contained glass fragments found in the ashes, six "objects thought to be teeth", a piece of the carpet, and the surviving slipper
>Although the body was almost completely cremated with parts apparently glassed, the room showed little evidence of a fire
>Reichert recorded a note stating that was so little damage done to the structure of the building and the furniture in the room that is was not even scorched or damaged by smoke
>The FBI eventually claimed Reeser was incinerated by the wick effect, where Reeser fell asleep under the influence of sleeping pills while smoking, and the cigarette set fire to her clothes with her body fat acting as a wick
>At the request of Chief Reichert, the scence was also investigated by anthropologist Professor William M Krogman
>Krogman was baffled by the case, and rejected the FBI view
>His hypothesis eventually fell on a hypothetical murderer with access to crematorium-type equipment and heat generating equipment to cremate the body and heat the doorknob and plastics

1976 Tehran UFO Incident
>September 19th, 1976, Tehran, Iran
>Citizens report strange lights in the sky
>Only until a senior military officer also sees theses objects that an F-4 was scrambled to investigate
>On approach, all instrumentation and communications were disabled
>Breaking off the intercept, the systems came back as normal
>Second F-4 was scrambled
>The radar return showed the unidentified craft was comparable to a KC-135, but the shape was glowing various colors in quick succession
>As the F-4 continued pursuit, a second object detached from the first and flew towards the plane
>At this point the pilot experienced a total loss of power to the weapons and communications systems and was forced to initiate a dive to escape
>The second object was observed to turn to the inside of the plane and return to the primary UFO object
>A third object detaches and hits the ground to produce a strange glow over a 2-3 km area
>Returning to base, the crewman of the F-4 witness another UFO, cylinder-shaped with steady lights
>When asked, the control tower confirmed that there as no other air traffic in the area but obtained a visual of the object
>Journalist Philip J. Klass writes that it was likely a misidentification of an astronomical body, likely Jupiter, and that pilot incompetence and faulty equipment accounts for the technological failures

Yes. An explanation has been found. I included it in the OP to make reference to the fact that well-known hoaxes were still acceptable, as long as they were entertaining. I guess this proves that not all people read before posting.

Solway Firth Spaceman Photograph
>Photo taken in 1964 by fireman Jim Templeton
>On May 23rd, 1964 Templeton took three photos of his young daughter while on a day trip to Burgh Marsh. Templton said the only other people there that day were a couple of old women
>Claims he did not notice anyone in the photo, the middle of the three, when taking them until after they were developed.
>In 2014, UFO author David Clarkle explained that the "spaceman" was most likely Jim's wife, Annie, who was there at the time and present in other photos
>Templeton most likely did not see his wife in the shot as the viewfinder his particular camera could only see around 70% of the shot
>The photo was subsequently overexposed, rendering her blue dress white.

This is a favorite of mine.

Apparently the original script to Steven Spielberg's ET was based on this incident. Obviously it would have been more of a horror movie if they had gone that route. IIRC some of the ideas in that script were recycled in Gremlins.

Maurice Masse Close Encounter
>July 1, 1965, rural France
>Farmer Maurice Masse encounters two small beings near a spherical object in a nearby field
>When he gets too close, one of the small, grey creatures points a tube-like object at him
>He is immediately paralyzed
>The two creatures communicate with each other through grunting sounds and appearing to be looking at plants
>After awhile, they return to the spherical craft and fly away, leaving landing gear impressions in the soil
>Masse tells his wife that his encounter was a spiritual experience and the site was now hallowed ground

Kecksburg UFO Incident
>December 9th, 1965
>A large fireball is seen by thousands in six US states and Ontario, Canada
>It careened over Michigan and Windsor, Canada, allegedly dropping hot metallic debris, causing grass fires and eventually sonic booms in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area.
>Press labels it a meteor, after discounting a crashing plane, faulty missile test, or a fallen satellite
>Witnesses in Kecksburg, Pennsylvania however claim to see something crash into the woods outside the town
>A boy reports seeing an object land, and when his mother sees a blue smoke arise from the woods she calls the authorities
>Some report a strange vibration when the object reportedly landed, or an audible thud
>Local volunteer fire-fighters claim to have found an acorn-shaped object the size of a Volkswagen Beetle, with writing around in a band around the base resembling Egyptian hieroglyphs
>Police arrive and attempt to barre access
>Shortly afterward, the US Army secured the area, ordering civilians out of the woods
>Witnesses see something being removed on a flat-bed truck
>Military claims they found nothing
>Reporter and news director for the local radio station, John Murphy, managed to arrive at the scene before the authorities in response to anxious calls from listeners
>He took interviews of witnesses and several rolls of photographs, with all but one roll of film being confiscated by the US Army
>Radio station office manager Mabel Mazza described one of the pictures as a "cone-shaped thing" taken from a distance
>In the following weeks Murphy wrote a radio documentary called "Object in the Woods" featuring his own experience and eye-witness interviews
>Shortly before it would have aired he received a unexpected visit at the station by two men dressed in black, allegedly government officials
>They requested to speak to him in private. Their meeting was a half an hour long.
>An employee recalled that the men confiscated Murphy's audio tapes and remaining photos

There are numerous underwater volcanoes in the s.Pacific and there have been reports of underwater eruptions that span back several hundred years. I have the 1955 book "Ventursome Voyages" by Capt. John Voss where he chronicles his little known round the world sail in 1903-1906 in a canadian indian dugout canoe. I think it was near Samoa that he encountered a wide area of water completely covered in floating pumice that took 2 days to sail through.
>>
>>18632919
>A week later, a distressed Murphy airs a censored documentary, edited "at the request of interviewees"
>The new version did no even mention the object at all, and according to Mazza was completely different from the original
>After it aired, Murphy became increasingly despondent and refused to talk about the case, never giving a reason why
>In February, 1969, Murphy is struck and killed by an unidentified car while on vacation in California

>A 2003 scientific study of the area found a line of damaged trees, broken at the top, leading to the supposed crash sight
>Core samples from these trees date the damage back to 1965
>Documents released via the Freedom of Information Act indicate a three man team was sent from a Pittsburgh Air Force radar installation as part of Project Blue Book
>These documents state that nothing was found.

FlatwoodsMonster.jpg

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flatwoods_monster
>At 7:15 p.m. on September 12, 1952, two brothers, Edward and Fred May, and their friend Tommy Hyer witnessed a bright object cross the sky, coming to rest on land belonging to local farmer G. Bailey Fisher.
>Meet up with other people including a national guardsman to search for the ufo.
> they reportedly saw a large pulsating "ball of fire." They also detected a pungent mist that made their eyes and noses burn. Lemon then noticed two small lights over to the left of the object, underneath a nearby oak tree and directed his flashlight towards them, revealing the creature, which May reported as bounding towards them.
>Upon returning home, Mrs. May contacted local Sheriff Robert Carr and Mr. A. Lee Stewert, co-owner of the Braxton Democrat, a local newspaper. Stewert conducted a number of interviews and returned to the site with Lemon later that night, where he reported that "there was a sickening, burnt, metallic odor still prevailing". Sheriff Carr and his deputy Burnell Long searched the area separately, but reported finding no trace of the encounter other than the smell. Early the next morning, Stewert visited the site of the encounter for a second time and discovered two elongated tracks in the mud, as well as traces of a thick black liquid. He immediately reported them as being possible signs of a saucer landing, based on the premise that the area had not been subjected to vehicle traffic for at least a year. It was later revealed that the tracks were likely to have been those of a 1942 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by local Max Lockard, who had gone to the site to look for the creature some hours prior to Stewert's discovery.
>After the event, Mr. William and Donna Smith, investigators associated with Civilian Saucer Investigation, LA, obtained a number of accounts from witnesses who claimed to have experienced a similar or related phenomena.

The Romani Ranch "ghosts" are based on the Flatwoods monster, not the Hopkinsville goblins. The Pokemon Sableye is based on those, though.
