There were a handful of 'sub-humans' that were nearly as intelligent as us, if not more so. The two things these all lacked were a deep disgust of anything that looked similar to themselves, but subtly different (the uncanny valley effect) that made us want to kill them all and the equally deeply instilled need to have sex with anything that looks even vaguely human, which made us want to breed with them despite looking disgusting/terrifying. Those that weren't massacred were assimilated into our own gene pool until the remains of 'them' were just a part of 'us'.
