Can someone give me a rundown on numerology? Why do we ascribe special powers to 13, 666 etc.

Number were discovered, but number systems were invented. It's why their are axioms, the system we're using isn't perfect. Look into alternative mathematical systems, for an interesting read.

Not that work specifically, his studies went all over the place. Which I think is the real lesson to be learned, look everywhere for answers, and use logic to find the underlying principles at play; don't let any paradigm dispel your curiosity, even the the (currently)accepted scientific paradigm.

As a side note; the current scientific community are a bunch of glory seekers, who don't want to put the hours in re-checking data that's needed to actually help humanity. 90% of them are corporate whores, or trying to become a corporate whore desperately. Unfortunately, it's becoming less and less of community of people genuinely trying to understand the universe.
