Some stuff people consider to be Mandela effects are not Mandela effects, it's just common misremembering shit. That being said I do believe there is some legitimacy to the Mandela effect, I just think it's being polluted by stuff that isn't. For example Rubik's cube has always been Rubik's cube, but it's common for people to refer to it as Rubix. It's like spelling socks as sox. There were never 52 states, it's common knowledge that there are 50. People who believe they remember 52 is due to the result of counting Hawaii and Alaska as extra's, thinking there are 50 on mainland and then Hawaii and Alaska is 52. That's a result of misunderstanding geography as a kid. I recall several classmates of mine back in the day thinking the same.

But that's not to say there isn't some truth to the Mandela effect. Try and think of stuff in your personal life or environment growing up that seem out of place or that you remember differently.

I remember there being a Whataburger here in my home state of Oregon only to find out recently that there has never been a whataburger fast food joint in my state. Closest is in Arizona, yet I have a perfect memory of a whataburger off a main road and I recall passing by it from time to time. I even remember the town it was in, but when going by there now the whataburger is no longer there. There's no way I have my memories confused because I've lived in Oregon all my life. In fact I've never even visited a state that apparently has whataburger so it's impossible for to have any memory of the place anywhere else, but I remember it as bright as day. I even recall a friend of mine talking about the place back then so I know it's not just in my head. Anyone else have a similar experience?

Yes the other night I was sleeping in a dream and was having sleep paralysis in the dream. Woke up "still in dream" to poltergeist happenings. Then I woke up for reals.

Most cases of the Mandela effect can be attribute to conversion disorder and false memories in general. When you remember something you aren't actually remembering the subject itself but rather you're remembering the last time you remembered it, and every time you try to recall something your brain has to try and rebuild the memory in your head again, which can easily result in memories being reconstructed with false aspects, especially when there are loads of other people passing on the corrupted memories. It's like a glitch that spreads from one brain to another very easily because the differences between the false memories and the real ones are very minor, making it hard to tell which is which. Some of the instances can be written off because people are just remembering the way something was spoken rather than how it was actually written as with sex and the city. Most people remember it as sex in the city because when speaking the words sex and the city you pronounce the and like n' or &.

Mandela Effect is silly. Some of the stuff does bother me, though.

Chick-fil-a is a big one. It was one of my favorite food joints as a kid, and I don't know why myself and so many others would remember it being spelled incorrectly.

The Sinbad Genie movie thing is maybe the biggest one for me. I would've sworn I saw commercials for it on Disney Channel in the mid '90s. After hearing he did do a Sinbad the Sailor marathon, though. I think that's probably where I and so many other people get it from.

Pikachu's tail, Staples logo, Froot Loops, the Thinker, and South America's position bother me too, but I can see those just being things I misremember too.

A lot of it is just dumb, though. I remember having the Berenstain Bears revelation like fifteen years ago.

From 2001 to 2008 I worked in TV Azteca, a Mexican multimedia company, we'd been trying to get the rights to air it in Mexico since late 2000 and when we finally did we came with a little localization problem: you see the title "Sex and The City" doesn't make a lot of sense in Spanish, so what we (and the Spaniards) had to do was change it to "Sex IN the City" ("Sexo en la Ciudad").

You guys remember the James Bond movie Moonraker? He goes into space and there's a shuttle and all that junk. Anyway the villain's henchman is Jaws, who you'll remember is a huge guy with fearsome metal teeth that he uses to bite through metal and other stuff.
And maybe you also remember that Jaws meets a girl, Dolly, they fall in love and switch sides to help Bond. She's dorky, very small and has glasses and pigtails. But why do her and Jaws fall in love at first sight? Because she has braces, right? They're both ostracized for their weird teeth.

I never saw the animatronic sheep spots growing up, only this one ad played multiple times where he was walking around this cave with rocks falling all around him. I remember it since its what made me beg my parents to get me the game and it couldn't have been for the sequels since it was long before the sequels came out. I've only met a small handful of people who remember it the way I do, but then again there aren't many people still talking about the purple guy today.

'Mandela Effect' is a horrible name for this phenomenon. I have not heard of a single person from South Africa who thought Mandela died in the 80s.

Just as I have not heard of a single Italian person who remembers Italy to look different than it looks today. These examples are cases of bad memory/education imo.

I also think that some of the wrong movie quotes (Star Wars, Forest Gump) might just be the result of pop culture. People put 'Luke' in the star wars quote as a reference when making a joke so that

people instantly get what they are talking about. The Forrest Gump quote simply sounds better than the one in the movie.

Now I'm not saying that the wrong movie quotes are not a result of the Mandela Effect, but that they are questionable examples.

The ones that I really believe in are the logos and some of the spelling changes.

Both, the new Kit-Kat and the VW logo do not look right to me. I remember specifically the day that I realized the VW logo shows a 'V' and a 'W' and I remember specifically that there was no gap between the letters.

The most interesting to me is Chic-fil-A since the version that Mandela people remember was spelled wrong the first place.

Why would people specifically remember that it was spelled wrong (without k) if it never was?

It's word-play. Both words are intentionally spelled wrong. "looney" is originally spelt luny or (lunatic/lunacy) and toons (short for cartoon) is tunes. They sort of make a anagram by switching up the vowels to make it even more luny.

Luny Toons = Looney Tunes
