IMO the pics might be drawn by people that hadn't seen the plants, just drew things by descriptions. Maybe made by others that had only heard of it too
The strange language had to be to keep its content secret, since it can't be linked to any other language. If it's not meant to be secret, then it has to be transcription of already existing, older text, that the creator probably didn't understand himself.
