Alchemy is the study of internal and external transformation. Alchemy is not chemistry per se, since the alchemist works on both the physical, astral and mental planes, while the chemist works on the physical plane alone - by working on the higher planes, the blueprints to the physical, the accomplishments of the alchemist seems absurd to the chemist.

What Alchemy is...is ambiguous. It can be the study and practice of mastering material change...or the mastery of spiritual change in one's self. In the spiritual case, metals and substances are used as allegories for aspects of the soul.

There are two branches, they sometimes mingle. One path is a protoscience path - working in a laboratory type setting. The other is a more philosophical, mystical art.

Some Alchemy's goals can be boiled down to these:
>find a better universal solvent than water
>turn metals into more rare, precious ones (gold, silver, etc)
>turn common crystals into rare, precious ones (diamonds)
>create an elixir of immortality or one that cures all ailments
>discover enlightenment or obtain Godly-hood
>create life (homonculus)
>create perpetual energy

The thought process is that these can be gained by creating the philosopher's stone. The keys to creating the philosopher's stone are the prima materia (which is a chaotic, base mass) and the anima mundi (which is essentially a soul or the link to all living things).

This process is done by purification, transmutation, and manipulation via the occultist - using the classic elements (fire, water, etc.)
