I am The Editor, the anonymous creator of this idea and collector of the news that will be following below. In the interests of legitimacy, I will be using a secure tripcode to post the thread; once the posts are completed, I will take the tripcode off and return to my anonymity.

Scientists Create Semi-Synthetic Life

For the first time ever, researchers have succeeded in creating healthy organisms with synthetic DNA.

In what is being hailed as a major breakthrough that could lead to the creation of whole new life forms, Floyd Romesberg and colleagues at the Scripps Research Institute in California have managed to produce E coli microbes modified with an extended genetic code. The research, which is aimed at producing new kinds of proteins for use in medicine, has made it possible for scientists to effectively program how the organisms will operate and behave. The expanded genetic code includes two new molecules - X and Y - which the organisms absorb through feeding. This aspect of the process is also intended as a fail-safe in the unlikely event that the microbes ever manage to escape the lab.

While Romesberg and his team had managed to produce semi-synthetic microbes in the lab before, their previous efforts had seen the organisms die off almost immediately. This time however their creations appear to be thriving.

"This is a major step forward in showing that a living cell such as a simple bacterium can be engineered to sustain a synthetic base pair not found in nature," said scientist Paul Freemont. "This leads to the concept of semi-synthetic living systems that could be engineered to perform specific functions that would rely on a distinct genetic code compared to the natural genetic code."

Peter Bebergal's Top 10 Occult in Media

Art and culture are littered with occult symbols, references, influences, themes, and polemics. Often they are a way for an artist or musician to position themselves on the fringe and Avant Garde. The occult is considered heterodox, a means of pushing against the normative and the mainstream, of the individual taking their spiritual destiny into their own hands. For the artist, there is much fodder in the arcane and the esoteric to represent their own path towards their own purpose and will. Or the will of the gods. It is a challenge to bring together a list that encompasses all the wondrous attempts to capture the ineffable quality of the occult and magic. Some art and music wears the influence on their sleeves, others shroud it with deeply symbolic language. Recently I have been interested in the stranger and darker examples, where spirits are invoked in secret groves and even believers are awestruck at the full revelation of their work.

Here, then, is a list of my current favorites, those I return to again and again to be amazed, frightened, or simply hypnotized by how these ideas and symbols so perfectly key into our weird selves.

Expanded Perspectives: Viracocha, The Incan God of Creation

On this episode of Expanded Perspectives the guys talk about how a lot of people mix up children’s names or friends’ names and as it turns out it’s because you love them. It’s not related to a bad memory or to aging, but rather to how the brain categorizes names. Then, according to a new study recently published in the journal Science Advances, evidence shows that humans occupied much of the Sahara during the ‘wet period’ around 8,000 years ago. Then, a Tennessee resident was recently startled by a Bigfoot type creature. Then, Cam brings up the story of “Viracocha”. Viracocha was the supreme god of the Incas. He is also known as Huiracocha, Wiraqoca and Wiro Qocha. Considered the creator god he was the father of all other Inca gods and it was he who formed the earth, heavens, sun, moon and all living beings.

Astonishing Legends: The Count of Saint Germain, Part 3

There seems to be no doubt that the Count of Saint Germain existed, but how did he exist and for how long? There are levels to the incredulity of his story. It seems unlikely that one individual could possess so many varied talents, but the Count’s most unlikely talent was living into his 80s while still looking to be in his 50s. If you’re willing to go even further and believe the accounts of some of his contemporaries, then the Count was over 100 years old and lived well into the 19th century. Impossible you say? Then you might have even more trouble believing what many of those who had studied under him and some that continue to study his life believe, that the Count may have been hundreds or even thousands of years old, knew the ancient wisdom and secrets of life, and practiced the lost arts known only to the most enlightened beings. Whatever you choose to believe, a strong argument could be made that in his time and long after, he was actually the real ‘most interesting man in the world’.

Blurry Photos Podcast: Coral Castle

Get your two bits ready, Flora and Stecco are taking you on a tour of the Coral Castle! A limestone construct in southern Florida, Coral Castle might just be a roadside oddity if not for the fact that tons of limestone was erected by a single man. Latvian-born Edward Liedskalnins single-handedly built a strange, stone structure, but stories say no one can explain how he did this. Apparently his work was done at night, and rumors have it that he used the simplest of tools for the job. Or maybe something else. Could he have unlocked some secret of the universe – anti-gravity, telluric energy, etc. – to move tons of limestone into place? And why did he build it? The boys of Blurry Photos look into Ed’s life and the rumors surrounding the construction of the site.
