This is an ancient Voodoo curse known as "Cats in the Neighborhood." I'd be careful.

Witches don't usually leave callsigns, but it still might be sign of a curse. A black cat ripped the head off a bird and dropped it off at your doorstep.

It's something like that. I think there's also a bit of reciprocity, like "thanks for the food,, here's some for you", so there's an element of "oh, my mice not good enough for you?" type of thing.

My dog does that to birds...mice....cats. pretty much any animal he gets hold of ends up decapitated.


Also as a side not, chopping heads of of things in rituals is sort of rare since it would defeat the purpose of sacrificing the animal.
