Why are vampires obsessed with counting?

According to a myth, and if I remember correctly it was one of the original ones, vampires can't count any higher than three, because of the holy trinity or some shit? So one of the protections against vampires would be to throw rice on the floor, because they'd be stuck trying to count every single grain and getting tripped up as soon as they reached the number 3.
I know the whole thing is retarded but I'm pretty sure that was one of the earliest myths about vampires.
