When I was in college I took an art class and we were studying this artist (I forget the name). Anyway this artist had a childhood neighbor friend with a rare disease that made her frail and emaciated. She loved being outside in the fields because she was always cooped up in the house, so the artist decided to paint her. She had to be carried out because of her frail state, it was hard to walk. She died either before the painting was finished or right after. I forget.

Blood is always red, but can vary in brightness, like you said.. The difference is that blood will be brighter the more O2 is being carried in it. So, yes, arterial blood is brighter- arteries carry oxygenated blood from the lungs and veins carry it to the lungs (after the O2 has been spent). The reason arterial blood is bright is because it is freshly oxygenated. The brain burns the most oxygen, and because it needs so much, your body transports O2-heavy blood to it directly.
