Creepy is a very specific feeling. Being creeped out is different from being scared or grossed out or horrified or nervous etc. Being creeped out is so fun for me, and I know there are others who agree, but it's so hard to find movies that actually achieve this feeling.

So, let's list movies that creep us out. They don't even need to be horror, I've seen dramas/thrillers that creeped me out more than many horror movies.

Again, this isn't about gore or shock factor, it's about CREEPINESS

(aliens are one of the creepiest things to me, so my list will have a lot of alien movies)

>Signs
>The Fourth Kind
>The Corridor
>Banshee Chapter
>Mothman Prophecies
>Absentia
>The Canal

I know I have more but I'm tired and having trouble remembering, I'll add more later when I think of them
>>
>>18550945
Not sure about necessarily creeped out, but The Descent is pretty good.
>>
>>18550945
>They Look Like People
>Grave Encounters
>The Tunnel
>Mulholland Drive (especially that one scene)
>Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me (I like the show even better but this list is for movies so yeah)
>Ju-on
>Halloween

Caché by Michael Haneke is the only movie that had an impact on me since I'm like 12 years old. Give it a try.

I have watched it a couple times. I find it interesting, but not the slightest bit creepy. It's strange, yes, but nothing about it creeps me out, partly because the music is so upbeat. Music is huge for me, it can make or break the whole atmosphere.

I know VVitch is pretty recent and gets talked about a bit but for some reason the film has the ability to really unsettle first time watchers.

After experiencing the feeling myself with a group of friends I watched it with my fiance afterwards and when the credits started rolling she said she felt really uneasy and nervous after watching it.

Watched it with my parents last Halloween andyou Father couldn't sleep that night afterward.

Regardless of all of that it is certainly worth watching.
>>
>>18550945
Any good ones on netflix?
>>
>>18550945
The VVitch.

That movie was so well acted and nuanced about the evils of man that I can't begin to gawk about how filled with artistic integrity it is.
>>
>>18550945
Creep on Netflix is pretty creepy. It's not a bad watch.

The dumpster scene? That scene got me bad the first time, especially since I didn't expect it would go that far

Let me preface this by saying I have a MA in Film and a BA in screenwriting and production so my opinion on film might be a little different or skewed or unconventional compared to most normal people. That being said, I'd like to echo what has been said about "The Witch" (VVitch) and it not only delivers on that creepy, unsettling vibe but is definitely a superbly crafted movie and one of the best of 2017. You won't see it at the Oscars because the academy hates horror, but definitely see it. Believe it or not, it has some intriguing religious messages and tones that say "Evil is a very real, scary, terrifying thing but YOU have to indulge it for it to have power." As the Bible says, resist the devil and he will flee from you. The opposite is portrayed in this film: flirt with and indulge the devil, and he will consume you.

A classic I love in manner of creepiness and great tone and pacing is Shymalan's "Signs." Dumn water thing aside, it has a slow-boil creepiness that will not scare you, but leave you very uneasy. Oddly enough, present another Christian message on faith, how God "works all things together for the good of those who love him" as scripture also says and it has a really great performance by Mel Gibson at a dinner table.

One more (that has no redeeming qualities and is in fact gut-wrenching creepy and disturbing) is "A Serbian Film." It's not particularly well made or written, but damn it if it isn't just creepy. Plot: underground black market pornography. Let your imagination run wild; it's in here. It's not a snuff film, though - it's a crafted narrative so it's not like you are REALLY watching that shit, but you might as well be sometimes. I don't even want to describe some scenes but one involves a pregnant woman, a rapist, the newborn baby, and... yeah.

Also Eraserhead.

Speaking of Lynch, I've seen Mulholland Drive mentioned in this thread. Is that worth a go? I hear its WAY out there.
>>
>>18551714
You have pretty shit taste for a film student. A Serbian Film was so over the top that it was cringy or funny at best.

Mulholland Drive was great. Lynch is a master of ambiance. The plot isn't worth much though.
>>
>>18551714
How are you so cultured in film and yet have not seen Mulholland drive? It is one the most significant movies of the 2000's.

I also recommend The VVitch, I can't believe I forgot to add that to my list. I watched it a couple weeks ago and it was definitely creepy, the atmosphere was everything.

Also >>18551714 I'm glad there are others who appreciate Signs. I was so surprised when I started seeing people talk shit about it. I found it to be extremely creepy. Maybe part of it has to do with growing up in the midwest with corn fields literally everywhere. I still vividly remember driving home from the movie theater the first time I saw it and being so fucking creeped out because I was just driving past dozens of corn fields in the dark. It was the concept of the unseen presence, knowing that something is there, watching you, but you can't see it. I think that's why aliens creep me out so much, and why Signs is probably my favorite alien movie, it totally nails that feeling like nothing else (for me, anyway)

And yes, I would definitely recommend Mulholland Drive. The plot is pretty disjointed and difficult to follow or understand or connect, but if you've seen Lynch's work you'll be used to that.

>>18551652
>The dumpster scene?
Yep. Still one of the creepiest scenes I've ever seen. I wish I could rewatch it again for the first time and get that feeling again since it doesn't have the same affect knowing what's coming.
>>
>>18550945
Not sure if it's necessarily creepy but it's a great movie: Martyrs. Watch the original version in French with subtitles, the remake ruins the experience.
>>
>>18551741
Holy shit thank you. These are amazing.
>>
>>18551649
The Witch has as much to do with human depravity as any other gothic horror. It's a fictional analysis that helps you understand people, not a documentary.

Always love movie threads in /x/

I'd say one of my favorite horror movies that really does have just a creepy atmosphere to it would be "NOROI: THE CURSE". It's Japanese and found footage, but found footage done brilliantly and with several non found footage segments to it. Highly recommend it.

I never recommend someone to watch a movie for the first time on youtube, the quality sorta ruins it. Honestly you could just pirate it.
>>
>>18551714
Yeah, no.

I watched the Witch last year, seeing everyone raving about it. After watching it, all I could think was that it was extremely symptomatic of a culture gone hysterical with religion and fear of the devil. It feels like it was written by one of those people the news love to talk about who want evolution out of schools and creationism instead and who protest outside abortion clinics and diligently go to church every Sunday and believe hell is a real and tangible place. Like the people who believe those 9/11 conspiracies where some guy photoshopped the smoke to look like a scary face and who believed that story about that well in Russia that goes all the way to hell.

It's not creepy or scary. The only emotion I felt watching that movie was frustration, mostly at how dumb and incompetent the characters were, but also at the writers who contrived it together.

And don't get me started on the goat. What kind of retard gets killed by his own goat? I mean I know of a case, but the guy won a fucking Darwin Award over it, which should be telling.

I agree about the quality of YouTube. I knew the movie was on there and started it once but stopped right away because the quality was so bad.

I also don't torrent anymore because my ISP sent me a notice a while ago that if I continued to torrent movies they would disable my internet and I would no longer be able to receive service from them.

What about direct downloads or high quality streaming? I had searched a few sites in the past but was unable to find Noroi
>>
>>18553299
>I also don't torrent anymore because my ISP sent me a notice a while ago

Shit this is worldwide now. It's crazy to me that /x/ never talked about those recent laws that passed under everyone noses that censor some parts of the internet. Everyone was too busy talking about aliens. Use a VPN, there's some free ones. Your ISP won't be able to see what you downloaded unless they really want to. (They don't, shit's automated.)

I watched communiun with Chris Walken recently. I think it fits your definition of creepy pretty well, as long as you can keep from giggling at walken's silly accent. Most of it is just plain fuckin weird though
>>
>>18553351
Yeah this one gets recommended a lot, but I found it to be a huge letdown. I honestly don't get how an adult can find this creepy. If you saw it as a kid, yeah, definitely, but the horrible effects totally ruined it for me. It's a shame too because the atmosphere was superb, everything about the movie had amazing potential to be creepy as hell, but when the aliens look so silly and SO obviously fake, it just kills it. I wish I could go back and watch it when it came out, before I had been jaded by better special effects.

>>18553407

I can see that. I thought the little blue doctors were pretty well done, their masks were nicely detailed and animated. When that first grey peaks out behind the dresser those effects look fairly promising and then every other scene with greys looks derpy as hell. I really just enjoyed the movie for its consistency with ufo lore. As shitty as the greys looked, the way they floated around was a nice addition as that's pretty much how all abductees described their movement - definitely better than the way they skulk around in shit like Signs. A little more detail and movement in the grey's facial features would go a long way. In the end, the movie was entirely worth it to hear Chris Walken say "can't we talk this out?" Before getting probed.
>>
>>18553968
Jacob's ladder is a great one, creepy as hell

I loved VHS the first time I saw it but I recently watched it again and it lost it's effect for me knowing everything that happens. Still though if you haven't seen it I'd say it's definitely a must-watch

I did enjoy this movie. I feel like the creep factor is almost entirely encapsulated in the spaceship scene though. The drama of the missing person case is interesting and all, but there's not much in terms of spooky atmosphere outside of the spaceship scene and to a significantly lesser extent the abduction scene. Rock solid special effects for the minuscule portion of the movie that includes them.
