Probably around the same time we started burying our bodies I guess? Maybe God is just a relief for existential pain. We're the only animal that can predict far enough into the future to understand that we will die someday. This is probably why believing in the afterlife. As for the concept that there is only one entity controlling everything I don't know. Probably for political reasons.
